Games - Kubikiri Basara

Kubikiri Basara (Japanese: 首切り破沙羅 Kubikiri Basara) is a character from SNK Playmore
's Samurai Shodown series of fighting games. His distinguishing feature is a shrill laugh.

History

Samurai Shodown III

Basara lived in peace with his wife, Kagaribi, in the village of Tanba, until the monstrous demonic swordsman Zankuro Minazuki
came through and slaughtered everyone. Basara's last thoughts were of Kagaribi and wanting revenge on Zankuro. As a result, Basara was able to return to the mortal realm as a sort of ghost in order to exact his revenge.

Samurai Shodown IV

However, Zankuro was killed. Having no reason to remain, Basara searched for ways to finally rest in peace. Along his travels he discovers that he was revived by Shiro Tokisada Amakusa
, and so he heads for Shimabara to kill him. He fails; His soul being captured by Mizuki and eventually sealed away.

Trivia

  • Basara is voiced by Masahiro Nonaka, who also provides the voice for Kyo Kusanagi
in the King of Fighters series. That is until Samurai Spirits: Tenkaichi Kenkakuten, where apparently, Basara has a new Voice actor (which to many, sounds terrible in comparison to his former voice).
  • His backstory and design were directly inspired by James O'Barr's The Crow.
  • Kubikiri (首切り) literally means "neck cutting".
  • In Samurai Spirits Zero (Samurai Showdown V in the US), Basara's ending is wrong. It is stated in this game that Basara himself murdered his wife and then killed himself (causing him to become a ghost). This, of course, is wrong since it was stated in both SSIII and SSIV that Zankuro had murdered both Basara and Kagaribi. Chances are, Yuki changed the story due to the fact that SSZero did not have Zankuro's sprites in the game's memory, and they needed a reason for Basara to be in the story. Though, this error in the storyline was corrected in Samurai Spirits: Tenkaichi Kenkakuten. As in that game, Basra's ending clearly shows him facing Zankuro and defeating him, allowing both him and his wife to rest.
