In the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000
, the Legion of the Damned is a chapter of Space Marines which mysteriously appears to help overwhelmed Imperial forces, then vanishes just as mysteriously, leaving behind only the destruction which it has caused. The troops that make up the Legion of the Damned do not have strict uniform armour like other Space Marine chapters, instead having a variety of flames, bones, and skull patterns on their black armour. The Legion of the Damned is believed to be the remnants of the lost Fire Hawks chapter of Space Marines.

They originate from the disatrous Cursed 21st Founding of Space Marines. They were originally the Fire Hawks, but after being trapped in the Warp for over twenty years, they finally emerged, their number severely depleted, their flesh graying and decaying. Their armor was covered in emblems of fire and skulls. There was no way to continue the chapter because all the initiates died, so they became the Legion of the Damned.
