Games - List of Breath of Fire II characters

This is a list of the major and minor characters of Breath of Fire II.

Playable characters

Ryu

Ryu is the protagonist of Breath of Fire II.

Ryu is named after and descended from the protagonist of Breath of Fire
, and, like his ancestor, he is a hereditary member of the legendary dragon clan, inheriting the ability to transform into a dragon from his mother, Valerie.

In gameplay, Ryu is a well-balanced leader of the party, typical of protagonists of Japanese console role-playing games. While he lacks the Shaman fusions of his companions, he has the ability to transform into one of several dragons and make a single, powerful attack. (Unlike other Breath of Fire games, he only makes a single attack when he transforms, instead of staying in dragon form.)

At the beginning of Breath of Fire II, Ryu is a six-year-old boy, mourning, along with his sister, the apparent death of his mother. Things take a turn, however, when his father's stories of Ryu's mother are interrupted by Ryu collapsing and experiencing a strange vision. When Ryu awakes, his father and sister are gone, and no one in his home town of Gate recognizes him any more. His home is occupied by an unknown priest, who takes him in for the night.

Ryu is awoken by another boy, Bow, attempting to rob the church. Despite the fact that Ryu interrupts Bow's burglary, the two form a fast friendship, and leave the church and the town, seeking shelter in a nearby cave. Their shelter turns out to be much less safe than they expected, and they are attacked by a demon named Barubary.

Ten years pass, and Ryu and Bow are now rangers in their new home town of Hometown. They receive orders that they are to find a missing pet of a visiting princess named Mina (Nina's younger sister). They cross a nearby mountain range and find the pet about to be eaten by a hungry old man. From here their quest snowballs as Bow is accused of theft, Ryu encounters new companions and they all team up to uncover the truth of the St. Eva's church, which is really a cult whose leaders are a group of demons.

Bow

Bow is Ryu's courageous and loyal best friend.

In gameplay, Bow is the party's best healer, and generally solid defensively. In combat, he has a special ability called "Shot" which will either defeat enemies in one hit or have no effect, and out of combat he can hunt for animals with his bow.
Overview
Bow's past is never truly revealed. He meets Ryu at the age of six while staying at a church. Ryu's family has recently disappeared, and he suggests that the two of them stick together since they have no one else to turn to. Bow distrusts the church and, after looting the room he's in, talks Ryu into running away with him. They travel only a short distance before it begins raining and they are forced to take shelter in a nearby cave. While exploring the cave, they are attacked by the demon Barubary and the game fades out; when it resumes we are told that ten years have passed.

Ryu and Bow are still friends and work together as rangers in Hometown. The town elder offers them the assignment of finding a girl's lost pet and they accept. The mission ends with them rescuing a pig from a hungry old man named Niro, who was about to eat it. They return to Hometown and are thanked by the pig's owner, who is a pretty young woman named Mina, whose older sister, Nina, will later join them on their quest. That night, as Ryu is sleeping, Bow accepts an assignment from a shady character named Kilgore in hopes of earning some quick cash. Ryu wakes up in the middle of the night to discovering Bow missing; he talks to Kilgore and finds that Bow is wanted because of the robbery Kilgore had him commit. After finding Bow, it is revealed that before he could do the job, another thief had looted the place. Ryu sneaks Bow out of the town by having him hide in a trash can and the two of them try to think of a place for Bow to hide, eventually deciding to return to Niro's. After hearing their predicament (Kilgore had tricked Bow into stealing for him, claiming the treasure had originally been stolen from him and that returning it to its rightful owner wouldn't really be a crime) agrees to let Bow stay if he will help fix up his house. Bow readily agrees. These events start the game's first major objective, finding the real thief.

About a third of the game passes before Bow is able to clear his name and emerge from hiding. It is revealed that Trout, the man Bow stole from, was actually a demon. The elder apologizes for thinking Bow was the thief and tells him and Ryu about a strange occurrence in a nearby forest that some other rangers saw. The other rangers are too afraid to return there, so the elder asks Ryu and friends to check it out. Bow remains with the others for the rest of the game as they continue their journey to uncover the truth about St. Eva's church and destroy the demons. Although he remains valuable in battle, Bow plays a minor role throughout the rest of the story. A shamanized form of Bow is a giant, freakishly mutated-looking suit of armor that can shoot cannon balls.
