Games - List of banned computer and video games

This is a list of banned computer and video games.

A-Z

  • 50 Cent: Bulletproof was banned in Australia. A censored version was later released.
  • BMX XXX was banned in Australia.
  • Command & Conquer: Generals was banned in China despite the fact it presents China as a beneficial protagonist. It is largely believed it was banned because the GLA (terrorist group) uses a nuclear device to destroy the Gate of Heavenly Peace, where they are subsequently gunned down by the PRC. Additionally, the Chinese use highly destructive weapons on questionable targets.
  • *The original version is also banned in Germany, claiming too realistic warfare. A special version using robots instead of humans, however, is legal.
  • Doom 1 and 2 are banned in Germany. However, due to changes in rating laws, Doom 3 is not. Under these laws, re-releases Doom 1 and 2 would likely be permitted, but the prior law still applies for earlier releases of the game on the PC, Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn
. Doom 1 and 2 were released for the Game Boy Advance
in 2001 and 2003 in Germany, albeit slightly censored (green blood instead of red).
  • Dreamweb was banned in Australia.
  • Duke Nukem 3D was banned in Brazil.
  • Grand Theft Auto III was banned in Australia. A censored version was later released. It has also had sales restrictions placed upon it in a Kanagawa prefecture, Japan.
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas received an Adults Only classification in the US and Canada due to the Hot Coffee mod
controversy, effectively banning it as the game was pulled from the shelves of many major retail chains. For the same reason it was re-rated to RC (Refused Classification, means that games or movies cannot be sold), and therefore banned in Australia. A modified version minus sex scenes has since been reawarded an M rating, returning the game to the shelves.
  • The Guy Game was banned in the US for revealing a minor topless girl.
  • Harvester was banned in Germany. It was never banned in Australia, however, it probably would have if the local distributor for the game hadn't dropped it first. It was released in Great Britain but with some inappropriate content removed.
  • Hearts of Iron and Hearts of Iron 2 were banned in China, probably for the reason that it depicts Tibet and Sinkiang as independent.
  • Manhunt was banned in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany.
  • Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure was banned in Australia.
  • Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction was banned in South Korea.
  • NARC (2005 update) was banned in Australia.
  • Quake 1, 2 and 3 are banned in Germany. Quake 4 was released in a heavily cut form.
  • Phantasmagoria was banned in Australia.
  • Postal has been banned in many countries.
  • Postal² was banned in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Return to Castle Wolfenstein (English version) was banned in Germany. A localised version without swastikas and a heavily modified story was released.
  • Soccer Manager 2005 was banned in China.
  • Spear of Destiny was banned in Germany.
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 was banned in South Korea.
  • Wolfenstein 3D (English version) was banned in Germany.
  • Pokemon Blue was banned in Saudi Arabia for containing alleged subliminal Jewish symbols.
  • The Blitzkrieg (computer game) add-on "Stalingrad" was banned in Germany for containing realistic Nazi swastika flags on ground and tanks, and realistic medals with swastikas. A localised version without swastikas was released instead. (Still, many order the uncensored version from UK.)
  • Singles: Flirt Up Your Life has been banned in Australia for containing realistic propaganda flags and nudity.
  • Shellshock: Nam '67 has been banned in Australia. A censored version was later released with MA15+ Rating.
  • The Punisher (video game) has been banned in Australia. However, it has been re-rated MA15+ by the OFLC.
