Free first-person shooters are games of the first person shooter genre available with no cost. Not many first-person shooter games offer a free version of their game, but there are a few.

America's Army: Special Forces 2.6

America's Army (AA) is a tactical multiplayer first-person shooter owned by the U.S. government, financed through U.S. tax dollars and distributed free by the U.S. Army as a global public relations initiative to present a positive image of the current U.S. Army and help with U.S. Army recruitment. It claims to be extremely realistic and pose a better challenge, as players have to think harder and work better as a team with strangers.

It uses an 'honor' system to rank all players. A player's honor level is saved and updated every time he plays, creating an MMORPG style system, similar to the experience system in Battlefield 2.

Released on July 4, 2002, America's Army was developed by the MOVES Institute at the Naval Postgraduate School, in Monterey, California, and is based on the Unreal engine.

Axion Quake v1.1.0

Axion Quake (AxQ) is an action oriented first person shooter. It is based on action movies, where the premise is to kill stylishly. Axion is derived from Action Quake 2 a Q2 engine modification, that has since become open sourced, and now made into this standalone.

Released on January 14, 2006, Axion Quake was developed by AxionQuake.com - Full credit must be given to the original authors of the mod, The A-Team (Bartender, Cail, Suislide, Pietro, Ace12ga, Gooseman) and the Geno Team (Fireblade and Zucchini) who recoded the mod.

CodeRED: Alien Arena

CodeRED: Alien Arena is a fully functioned free deathmatch shooter that runs on Windows and Linux, and features standard deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and all out assault, in a funky 50's era sci-fi atmosphere.

As of this release (v 4.02), there are 20 maps, 9 player models, and 8 weapons. Gameplay is similar to Quake III, and the engine has an in-game browser to find other serves and players online. The game features beautiful effects such as light bloom and reflective water, and highly detailed models and textures.

Control Monger

Control Monger is a Free First-Person Shooter by NetCharger and Mindsurge Entertainment. Players play either in Team Mode with two teams (Red (House of Kahn) or Blue (House of Lo)) or in a Free For All frenzy. Strategy is required at all times to impliment the skills of each of the different types of bot to take the best advantage of the map. Two modes of gameplay are currently available, a death match, or a frantic race to capture the flag. Ojectives must be destroyed before the flag can be snatched, the opposing team can race to rebuild the objective, shielding the flag from your capture. File Size: 43 MB (plus patch)

Cube

Cube is a free, open source Quake-like first-person shooter computer game that runs on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X and even Pocket PC devices with 3D acceleration such as Dell Axim x50. It uses OpenGL and SDL. Cube features both single-player and multiplayer gameplay.

A "Next-Gen Cube" engine, called Sauerbraten is being currently developed. It is also open-source, features similar gameplay but more complex level geometry, and is already playable.

Digital Paint: Paintball 2.0

Digital Paint: Paintball 2.0 is a fast-paced, team-based, first-person shooter with a variety of game modes and support for up to 4 teams. Modes include Standard CTF, Siege (Attack/Defend), KOTH (King of the Hill), Elimination, Deathmatch (Free-for-all), and Pong. It was once a Quake2 mod but is now completely standalone and completely free.
