In early November 2005, the domain name live.com was bought by Microsoft, which now uses it for a web site that aims to integrate all kinds of Microsoft web services, such as MSN Messenger, Hotmail and Anti-virus scanning into one single homepage.

In the future, live.com will also feature Windows Live and Office Live: free versions of Microsoft software, sponsored by advertisements. It is believed that Microsoft has taken this step in response to Google teaming up with Sun Microsystems to create web-based software.

On March 8, 2005, live.com was updated with a new look, more gadgets, and an improved interface. It also featured, for the first time, the new Windows Live Search. Features include intelligent scrolling, dynamic image search, and saved searches.

At its launch, live.com only supported Internet Explorer, but now also supports other browsers such as Firefox.
