MSN Gaming Zone (also known as MSN Games, previously known as Microsoft Zone) is an online video game site created by Microsoft, under the realm of MSN Games. The site offers free online games, pay-to-play games, mobile games (for smartphones), and has a selection of older retail games.

History

Launched in 1996 as the "Internet Gaming Zone," it started out as an online gaming arcade (similar to Pogo.com and FreeArchade.com). By the end of 1999, MSN Gaming Zone had more than 10 million member registrations from around the world and up to 500,000 unique visitors per day, making the Zone one of the most popular gaming communities on the Internet.

By 2003, after the dot-com boom when many Internet sites claimed difficulties managing their finances, MSN Games changed its market strategy and left the retail games market to focus solely on free and premium games.

At one time, Zone membership included the use of a proprietary online instant messenger service, ZoneMessenger, with service limited to just the Gaming Zone. Since then, it has been replaced with MSN Messenger, which lets gamers chat inside and outside the Gaming Zone. By 2005, MSN Messenger was also supporting its own collection of online games, specially adapted or designed to work in an instant messenger environment.
