| The MacBook Pro is a laptop Macintosh personal computer developed by Apple Computer, first announced by Steve Jobs at the Macworld Expo on January 10, 2006. It is the successor to the PowerBook family of professional Macintosh laptops, and is the first Macintosh laptop to use an Intel processor. The laptop began shipping in mid-February 2006. The MacBook Pro and the new iMac Core Duo are the first Apple computers to feature Intel processors instead of PowerPC processors, followed by the Mac mini. The rest of Apple's product lines is expected to switch from PowerPC to Intel by the end of 2006. First generation (January 2006)The current version of the MacBook Pro features an Intel Core Duo processor running at 1.83 GHz, 2.0 GHz, or 2.16 GHz; an 80 GB, 100 GB (5400 or 7200 rpm), or 120 GB hard drive (5400 rpm); an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics card (128 or 256 MiB GDDR3); up to 2 GiB of RAM; a 15.4-inch screen with a native resolution of 1440 × 900; and a built-in iSight camera. Bundled with the machine is an Apple Remote with Front Row, Photo Booth, Mac OS X Tiger, and iLife '06. The MacBook Pro also features a new power connector, the MagSafe, which is designed to detach easily when yanked to prevent the laptop from being pulled off a surface. The MacBook Pro also features a backlit keyboard and a scrolling trackpad. The machine weighs 2.54 kg (5.6 pounds) and features similar styling to its immediate predecessor, the aluminum 15.2-inch PowerBook. However, it is slightly thinner (as well as thinner than the last 17-inch PowerBook) with a thickness of 2.59 cm (one inch), and features a slightly larger screen at 15.4 inches diagonally versus the previous Powerbook's 15.2 inch screen. The new MacBook Pro includes both USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 ports and a next-generation replacement for the PC card slot, known as ExpressCard/34. A DVI to VGA adaptor is included. A DVI to S-Video/composite TV-out adaptor (the same one used for the Mac mini and Power Mac G5) is available for separate purchase. The FireWire 800 and V.92 modem available in earlier PowerBook computers have been eliminated; however, an external Apple USB modem is available. The first generation began shipping on February 14 2006 with upgraded specifications from the original announcement: Steve Jobs announced two models of the MacBook Pro at Macworld San Francisco on January 10th, 2006, running at 1.67 GHz and 1.83 GHz respectively. Before shipping, these specifications were upgraded to 1.83 GHz and 2.0 GHz respectively; and a build-to-order option with an 2.16 GHz processor (fastest Intel Core Duo chip at the time) was made available.
