Magby (ブビィ Bubii in Japanese, Magby in French, German) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise. A Fire-type, Magby is the baby form of Magmar. Magby has access to some interesting attacks that Magmar cannot otherwise learn, similar to Smoochum, Elekid, Pichu, Cleffa, and Igglybuff.

The name "Magby" is a combination of magma and baby. It also takes it's name from the bird Magpie.

Biology

Magby are commonly found in volcanic craters. It is said that when many gather together, it heralds a volcanic eruption.

Their body temperature is over 1100 degrees, so they should not be underestimated. Every time a Magby inhales and exhales, hot embers dribble out of its mouth and nostrils.

In the Pokémon video games

Magby can only be obtained by breeding a two Magmar together, breeding a female Magmar with a male in the same Egg-Group or by breeding a Magmar with a Ditto. Therefore the availability of Magby is derrived from the availability of Magmar.

Magby, like Elekid and Smoochum, has good Stats for a Baby Pokémon, with good SP. ATTACK and SP. DEFENSE, but low HP and DEFENSE, similar also to Magmar.

Magby evolves into Magmar at LVL30.

Animé Appearances

A Magby lives in Millennium Town, and is a friend of the Pichu Brothers. It appears in the third Pikachu short (Pikachu and Pichu), the short in Pokémon Channel (Party Panic), and three episodes of Pokémon Chronicles.

Another Magby was used by a trainer preparing for the Silver Conference, which evolved into a Magmar. And a third was hidden in a Pelipper's mouth to cheat by making it look like Pelipper could use Flamethrower.

Manga Appearances

Magby appears in chapters 107 and 121 of Pokémon Adventures. First, after hatching Togepi Gold is sent to visit a Daycare house where he has to round up a baby Magby, (along with a Cleffa, Igglybuff, and Smoochum.) Magby is also a Pokémon that Crystal has caught, which is only seen as she sends it to Professor Oak at the beginning of chapter 121.

In the card game

Magby has appeared a number of times in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, each time as a Fire Baby Pokémon, in the following sets: Neo Genesis, Expedition (with rare and holographic versions) and EX Team Rocket Returns.
