Games - Major League Gaming

Major League Gaming (MLG) is the first console video gaming league organized on a national level. It was founded in the year 2002 by Michael Sepso, currently the CEO and Sundance Digiovanni, currently the President. MLG events currently take place in the United States.

Games currently supported for tournament play are Halo 2 and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Historically, Major League Gaming also held competitions for Tekken 5 but low turnout led to the discontinuation of that tournament in October 2005. In addition, tournaments were held for Gran Turismo 3 and Soul Calibur in the 2004 season, but these were also dropped, again due to low turnout.

Play runs in season format, with several events held in different locations throughout the year. The 2005 season has thirteen scheduled events and had ten events in the 2004 season. It is worth noting that although seasons are labeled by a year, every event in the season does not necessarily occur within that calendar year. For example the 2005 Season Championship in New York took place in the first quarter of 2006.

MLG tournaments are competitive and serious in nature. A major driving force behind this is the high prize money on offer: in the 2005 season, the purse totaled $250,000 and is rumored to rise to $1,000,000 in 2006. As with any other competition, another key driving force is rivalry between players or teams and the general pride of competing.

Publicity

MLG was featured in an MTV "True Life" episode entitled "I'm a Professional Gamer." MLG and Victor de Leon, alias "Lil Poison", were also featured on 60 Minutes (CBS), along with pro gamer Johnathan Wendel, alias "Fata1ity". MLG was also featured in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, noting that MLG has recently acquired $10 million dollars in funding to help craft the league.
