Games - Manene

Manene (マネネ) is a fictional character in the Pokémon
franchise. It is one of the “preview” Pokémon to the fourth generation of games, cards and anime, having been released prior to the release of the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl versions for Nintendo DS
.

Manene is the Japanese name for the Pokémon, and it is derived from the Japanese word for mimicry, mane. Its English name has not been revealed yet.

Characteristics

Manene appears to be almost like a miniature harlequin, which is fitting because that can also be used to describe its evolution, Mr. Mime
. In fact, due to its appearance as a plush doll, one could say that Manene's appearance is likely inspired by the Strawberry Shortcake franchise. It also shows some resemblance to an ice cream cone

Manene is evidently a jolly Pokémon that has an affinity to mimicing the movements and emotions of the people and Pokémon around it. It is also known to enjoy performing its own brand of dancing.

In the video games

Manene is promised to be among the new Pokémon in the Nintendo DS
versions of Pokémon, Diamond and Pearl. As the pre-evolved form of Mr. Mime, Manene is expected to be obtained by breeding Mr. Mime, probably under a special circumstance not seen in previous games. Manene is a Psychic type, at the baby stage, may carry the Soundproof ability (not yet confirmed), and has some knowledge of the move Teeter Dance.

Manene is to make a cameo appearance in another game to be released prior to Diamond and Pearl: Pokémon Mysterious Dungeon for GBA and DS. In it, it is a collectible statue alongside the other currently known fourth generation Pokémon.

In the anime

Manene's first anime appearance was in the Japanese opening to the Battle Frontier episodes, where it was seen dancing with Team Rocket. This same scene was used in the opening to Advance Battle, the dubbed version of the third season in Hoenn, which aired a few months later. However, despite the dub being a year behind the Japanese episodes, it was not until a month after appearing in this opening that Manene actually joined Team Rocket in Japan. Also, soon after premiering Advance Battle in America, the opening sequence was modified so that Manene was cut out, alongside the Manyula
that appears in the same scene and the shot of Lucario
later in the sequence, leaving a scene where Team Rocket dances and gets startled by nothing.

Manene's first actual official appearance in an anime episode (after its appearance in the eighth movie) is in the currently undubbed episode Enter Manene! House of Relaxation!. It belonged to the caretakers of James' summer mansion, but then decided to travel with James and jumped into one of his' pokéballs as he left behind his sick Chimecho
.

Movie Appearance

Manene’s first official appearance was actually in the eighth Pokémon movie prior to the above anime episode: Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. In it, it is under the ownership of Queen Irene of the city of Rohta.

In several scenes during the movie, Manene is seen mimicing the actions of other humans around it, including Brock when he first meets Kid in one of his trademark love-at-first-sight bouts. This is meant as homage to the mimicing behavior of its evolved form Mr. Mime
.

In other media

Manene, like the other 4th-gen Pokémon, has not seen trading cards
in America as of now, but it has already appeared in several promotional cards in Japan, including one in the Japanese-only half-deck promoting the eighth Pokémon movie.
