Matthew Kane is the protagonist of the computer game Quake 4. He is the first named main character of the Quake series.CharacterKane is a 23-year-old Marine that has a very shady, cryptic past, and is the talk of the other Marines in Rhino Squad. He is part of the massive invasion force that strikes Stroggos seconds after Quake II.He is a silent protagonist, although he was presumbly the narrator during the trailer, with these words about the Strogg: "I hear their voices when I sleep. I've seen the worst of war. You can't escape the images of the Strogg. A metallic spine, shunting awkwardly through muscle. Flesh and bone fused with wires and steel. I hear their voices when I sleep. Created for war, and fuelled by the blood of their enemy. But this isn't just a nightmare, it's who I've become." He is born in Lunar Colony, New Hope. He has a height of 5'11, and weighs 180 of an unspecified unit, most likely pounds. It is found out during the game that Kane was the only survivor of the attack on Space Station Armstrong by the Strogg at the beginning of the invasion of Earth. He was committed to an asylum possibly due to mental trauma, before returning to active duty. He was reassigned to Rhino Squad, and was put under very strict orders to remain silent about the event. He is the talk of the other Marines and has a sort of legendary status. 'Stroggified' KaneWhile attempting to destroy a Strogg facility, Kane is defeated and captured by the Makron, and deemed suitable for immediate cybernetic augmentation. He is taken to a Strogg Medical Facility and restrained to a metal slab mounted on an assembly line. Another captured marine in front of him allows Kane to witness the gruesome process used by the Strogg to create their soldiers before being subjected to it. Viewing of the entire process may make certain viewers vomit.A laser scanner checks Kane for unknown parameters before being carted off to the next station, where a large hypodermic needle pumps enormous amounts of steroids into his chest, most likely intended to sustain him throughout the Stroggification process. He is then checked by one of the facilities' Strogg scientists, who appears to inspect the wound, give him another injection, and partially lacerate his face. The next station is notoriously gruesome. A circular saw, mounted on a mechanical arm, proceeds to messily amputate Kane's lower legs above the knee. Kane blacks out, but amazingly he does not bleed to death despite the obvious seperation of his femoral artery. After regaining consciousness, he is transported to the next station. Mechanical legs are grafted onto the remainders of his thighs, and a system of armor plating is riveted to his torso and extremities. The fourth station installs the neurocyte in Kane's brain with a large hypodermic needle. He instantly gains the ability to read and understand the Strogg Language. The final stage of the process invloves the activation of the neurocyte and therefore full Stroggification. Before this can take place, however, Kane is rescued by his squadmates. Kane gains several new Strogg traits. His top speed increases slightly, along with his health maximum. He also gains the ability to use certain Strogg technologies, such as teleporters and health stations. Of particular note is his immunity to Strogg laser defence grids, which are instantly lethal to humans who come in contact with them. Squadmate Lance Corporal Nikolai "Sledge" Sledjonovitch says to Kane right after his medical examination "Welcome back Corporal Kane. May I be the first to say, you look like shit", a sentiment shared by another squadmate, Corporal William "Billy" Rhodes. Kane's squadmates change their opinion of him when it is shown that only with Strogg technology embedded within Kane's body could the humans have destroyed the Nexus, and ultimately win the war.
