In Pokémon Red and Blue, the Mew Glitch is a famous glitch that allows the player to capture of the normally unobtainable Pokémon Mew. In contrast to the famous Missingno. glitch, the Mew glitch was not discovered until after the release of Pokémon Yellow, and so it works in the Yellow version. The glitchThe Mew glitch can be activated in this manner:#Obtain a Pokémon with the move "Fly" and fly to Lavender Town. #Travel to the left of Lavender town and stand in front of the door of the underground tunnel. #Take one step down while holding the "start" button. The menu should pop up. #Use Fly to fly to Cerulean City. If this step is correctly executed, the trainer below the house should have an exclamation point above his head. #Walk across the Nugget Bridge to the trainers before Bill's House. #Walk above the Youngster with a Slowpoke. Do not talk to this trainer; it results in game freezing. #After defeating the Youngster, fly to Lavender Town and proceed to the left. #When the menu pops up, press B to dismiss it. #If the above steps have been followed properly, a level 7 Mew should appear. VariantA similar variant to this trick has been discovered that allows the capturing of any Pokémon, including Mew and Missingno. in the Yellow Version. Additionally, glitch Pokémon other than Missingno. and 'M can be captured.#Obtain a Pokémon with the move "Fly" and fly to Lavender Town. #Travel to the left of Lavender town and stand in front of the door of the underground tunnel. #Take one step down while holding the "start" button. The menu should pop up. #Use Fly to fly to any city where a trainer has not been defeated. #Battle the trainer. This will unlock the start menu. #Fly to any place where wild Dittos may be encountered. To the right of Fuschia City is a common location. #Battle the Ditto, letting it transform into one of your Pokémon. #After battle, immediately fly to Lavender Town and walk to the right. #If done correctly, a Pokémon will appear. The Pokémon appearing in step 9 is dependant on the Special stat of the Pokémon in step 7. A complete list, including instructions, can be found Technical descriptionThe Mew glitch occurs due to a minor programming oversight. When the player steps down towards the Gambler, normally a battle would occur. When the player flies away, however, the battle does not occur. The game does, though, store the data, signaling for a battle occuring in Lavender Town. When the player fights the Youngster, the battle data for the Gambler is overwritten with the battle data for the Youngster. Due to the way the game reads battle data, the Slowpoke's Special stat of 0x15 (21 decimal) is placed in the same location that codes for a wild Pokémon. Returning to Lavender Town, the game attempts to resume the previous battle but using the new data. By accessing the hexadecimal value 0x15, the game loads the battle data for Mew. ReactionThe discovery of this glitch was met with stubborn resistance and disbelief. Mew is considered to be one of the rarest Pokemon to get; it was only obtainable through a Nintendo event, and can only be obtained in-game in the Japanese versions of Red and Blue. Many players simply used an Action Replay to hack the Pokemon into their games. Advanced ROM hackers have scoured the game code and could not find any indication of Mew anywhere. The glitch existed in some form before, but it received widespread publicity on the GameFAQs message boards on April 20, 2003.
