Mightyena (known as グラエナ Guraena in Japan, Magnayen in Germany and Grahyena in France) is a fictional animal from the Pokémon franchise. The name, Mightyena, is a conjunction of mighty, or strong, and hyena, because it is based on a hyena.Appearance/BiologyMightyena is a moderately large, carnivorous Pokémon, like the real-life hyena alluded to by its name, though it also has characteristics of wolves. It has an almost Gothic appearance, thanks to black lips, black markings alongside its eyes, and its role as a creature of the night. It has large, powerful claws, red eyes and sharply pointed fangs. In the wild, Mightyena live and hunt in packs. They never defy the orders of their leader, the alpha male of the pack, and thanks to the leader’s experience in battle tactics like a general, the pack defeats foes with perfectly coordinated teamwork. Mightyena are naturally quick to attack; they chase down their prey and nip until the target can no longer run. In the event that an individual Mightyena encounters a threatening foe, it gives obvious signals when it is preparing to attack. It starts to growl deeply and then flattens its body before biting savagely. Like Arcanine and Houndoom, when domesticated (i.e. caught in a Poke-Ball), Mightyena takes on either the role of a loyal pet or a fierce tool for battle. The memory of its life in the wild, along with the fact that Mightyena and their wild communities have existed since ancient times, compels the Pokémon to obey only those trainers that it recognizes to possess superior skill. In that respect, it will obey the commands of him or her unquestioningly. Mightyena are therefore common among members of criminal groups like Team Magma and Team Aqua, due to their battling nature, easiness to be controlled, and commonness. In the animeThe first appearance of Mightyena was a pack of them which had a Poochyena in it that Max helped to evolve into a Mightyena to join his friends. Mightyena made its second anime appearance as one of Butch's constantly changing Pokémon and fought, in his battle against Richie, Tracey, Misty & Casey, with one. Next, Ash Ketchum and friends encountered three in a Pokémon preserve. Mightyena's present role is being the attack dog of Team Magma. In the video gamesMightyena in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire is only available by evolving a Poochyena but in Pokémon Emerald, it can be caught on routes 120, 121 and 123. If you want to have one on LeafGreen of FireRed, you must trade it from Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald.Mightyena is generally not widely used as a competitive Pokemon because its stats are not quite as high as several other Pokemon of the Dark type. However, it holds more influence as an enemy Pokemon in the games because its ability, Intimidate, automatically lowers the attack rating of the Pokemon around it upon being sent out. Giving it mostly physical attacks works well. Moves like Shadow Ball, Return, Body Slam, and Poison Fang are useful. Mightyena is also seen in many cards in the Trading Card Game, especially in the expansion Team Magma vs. Team Aqua. In other mediaMightyena is a main character in Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪, the love interest of Torchic (though he seems oblivious to her affections) and elder brother of Poochyena. In Pokémon Adventures, Ruby's Poochyena Nana evolves into Mightyena to help fight a swarm of angry Mawile in Granite Cave.Mightyena is a prominent and easily accessible stage-1 dark-type Pokemon in the card game, just like it is in the video games. It has made appearances in EX Ruby and Sapphire (Holographic), EX Ruby and Sapphire (Rare), EX Team Magma vs. Team Aqua (as Team Magma's Mightyena, 2 cards), EX Team Magma vs. Team Aqua (as Team Aqua's Mightyena, 2 cards), EX Deoxys and EX Delta Species'' (as a Dark/Steel dual-type).
