Mirkwood is a free multi-player game. For ten years, Mirkwood has offered a loosely Tolkien-based adventure Multi-User Dungeon, featuring ANSI color, a newbie-friendly environment bolstered by a no player killing system, talented and motivated coders, and the best abbreviation system in any MUD anywhere.

The game system is based on killing creatures (mobiles, mobs for short), and gaining experience and money for each kill. Mobs can be based on people in real life, creatures of fantasy, characters within books, etc. The highest possible level attainable through these means is 91, but one can become promoted to immortal status for higher levels.

History

Starting in 1995, Mirkwood celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2005, still boasting a relatively strong player base.

Gameplay

Races

Human: The standard race that occupies most of the world.
Dwarf: The stoic and short dwellers of mountains. They love ale, gold, gems.
Elf: The pointy ear'd people of the trees. Quick, smart, and subtle.
Giant: The massive human-like beings with slow minds but strong bodies.
Shade: The beings of shadow who are linked to the ethereal plane.
Hobbit: The small simple folk who have an endless appetite for food.
Treant
: The living trees that come from the deep old forests of the world.
Orc: The vile beings that sweep across the lands in terrifying hordes.

Remort Classes

Assassin - A more lethal version of the cunning thief.
Druid - A nature-based mage with the benefits of holy healing abilities
Knight - Hard-headed warriors with dual wielding capabilities
Ranger - Archers who roam the forests, seeking out their enemies.
Templar - Clerics who have received extra magic from their respective gods.
Warlock/Witch - Mages deeply immersed in the oldest and most volitile magics.

Areas

The basic areas in Mirkwood derived from stock DIKU mud, which contain standard fantasy based themes such as elves and dwarfs. Over the years, players have contributed their own written areas, covering different genres such as science fiction or the American Old West.

Creating areas are a time-consuming but rewarding process. Areas are submitted to the Immortal staff, who then decide whether the area meets Mirkwood standards and can be placed inside the mud. The criteria includes originality, usefulness, and overall fun.

Tribes

Mirkwood players organizes into tribes to generate competition and camaraderie. If three or more players in a tribe meet in their assigned challenge rooms, they can merge into their respective tribal champions. In this state, all the players but the leader is unable to control the champion who has the combined hit points, mana, moves, spells, and skills of the individual players. This, rather than player killing, allows tribes to settle quarrelsome or RP-natured battles.Being in a tribe also allows access to exclusive potions, equipment, and a nifty little tribal skill.
