In the Dungeons & Dragons
role-playing game, monk is one of the base character classes. A monk is a martial artist, capable of unarmed combat.

A Monk may only use their fists (or Monk approved weapons such as the quaterstaff and kama), wear no armor, and cast no spells but instead use Monk powers based on "Ki" that simulate a number of spell effects, a Monk must be Lawful and a Monk adds their wisdom bonus to their defense. At first a Monk may seem like an unattractive choice of class but in the hands of a skilled player a Monk can be quite powerful.

Artist Todd Lockwood's early sketch for the monk depicted them as wielding dual scimitars (with which they are not normally proficient), leading some to speculate that the class was originally based on the Turkish Whirling Dervish.
