In the beginning of the .hack universe, a German programmer named Harald Hoerwick fell in love with Emma Weilant, who wrote an epic poem entitled the Epitaph of Twilight. After Emma died in a car accident, Harald became distraught and created frägment, the prototype to The World
. Harald also worked on Aura as a symbol of his love for Emma and their could-have-been daughter. In order to help create Aura, Harald created the AI Morganna. Morganna had no purpose other than to create and awaken Aura. This "birth" would serve to signify as the introduction to a new age, a bridge between mankind and computers.

Upon the creation of Aura, Morganna realized that if Aura were to awaken, Morganna would be destroyed, as she would have no more purpose. In the .hack//SIGN series, Morganna managed to imprison the consciousness of Tsukasa, the story's protagonist, trapping him inside The World. Morganna linked Tsukasa's emotions to the development of Aura's AI, while manipulating him such that Aura can never awaken. At the end of the series, Morganna is incapable of keeping Aura from awakening and allowing Tsukasa to log out. Morganna took special procautions beforehand, altering the 8 Phases into invincible monsters, and sent them out to capture Aura.
