Games - Mushroom Kingdom

The Mushroom Kingdom (Japanese:キノコ王国) is a fictional setting in the Super Mario Bros. video game series where most of the games take place. It is a monarchy and its head of state and ruler is either Princess Peach
(in most games) or King Toadstool
(in the Mario comics and movie). The Chancellor of the kingdom is its head of government in Super Mario RPG. Its capital, as set forth by Paper Mario, is Toad Town
. Though Princess Peach and her father are always depicted as looking quite human, the citizens of this area are the mushroom-like Toads
.

The Mushroom Kingdom has been re-vamped several times over the course of the Mario games. In Super Mario Bros., for example, the Mushroom Kingdom encompassed 24 different levels of varying terrain. The kingdom later reappeared in Super Mario RPG, in which it seemed to be a mere city. Regardless, one characteristic of the Mushroom Kingdom seems to remain the same. Since Super Mario RPG, the Mushroom Kingdom has been depicted as the place where Princess Peach's Castle
stands — though the castle itself changed in size and layout throughout different games.

Bowser
, King of the Koopas, usually wants to kidnap Princess Peach so he can take over the Mushroom Kingdom or force a political marriage, though some fans and writers have implied that he also has romantic feelings for her. Games in the Mario series often suggest that the Mushroom Kingdom is a rival of Bowser's domain, the Koopa Kingdom. The Koopa Kingdom has been glimpsed at least twice as the last world in both Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World 2:Yoshi's Island, though several maps and tracks from the Mario Kart and Party series likely take place here as well.

Super Mario Bros. 3 takes place in the "Mushroom World
," a collection of eight different kingdoms ruled by independent kings. Some people equate the first kingdom, Grass Land, with the Mushroom Kingdom, but it's not clear what the precise relationship is. The instruction manual for the game states that King Bowser Koopa had taken over the Mushroom Kingdom, and that the Mushroom Kingdom is a gateway to the Mushroom World, but this is never elaborated upon in Super Mario Bros. 3 or in any other games. In the Mario comic books, the physical appearance of King Toadstool is based on that of the King of Grass Land.
