Games - Mystery Price

Mystery Price was a pricing game
on the American television game show, The Price Is Right
. It was played for a prize package (usually two or three prizes), and used small prizes.

Gameplay

A prize package of two or three related items – for example, a trip to London, luggage and a 35-mm camera outfit – was announced. One of those items (say, the camera outfit) had a "mystery price" which served as a target amount during the game.

The contestant was then shown four small prizes and asked to bid on each one. For every bid that was not an overbid, the contestant won the prize and the amount of the bid was added into the game's bank; if the contestant overbid on a small prize, the prize was lost and no bid was placed in the bank.

After all pricing questions were played, the "mystery price" was revealed. If the amount in the bank was at least as high as this price, the contestant won the prize package.

Retirement

  • Mystery Price premiered in the fall of 1973, and was quickly retired due to its complicated rules.
