Games - NHL Eastside Hockey Manager

NHL Eastside Hockey Manager is an ice hockey management simulation game developed by Sports Interactive
(SI Games) and published by Sega
.

History

The game was originally a freeware game called Eastside Hockey Manager
, developed by Finnish hockey fan Risto "Riz" Remes, which he coded in the Visual Basic
programming language. It simulated the full NHL season and had a database of around 3,000 players and staff. The game picked up a large following and was 'spotted' by a leading member of British game developers Sports Interactive who later purchased the rights to the game, with Risto Remes taken on as a member of the SI Games programming team. Together they started producing new, improved versions of the game under a developmental title Eastside Hockey Manager: Franchise Edition (or EHM:FE).

The first commercial version of the game was released in July 2004 under the new brand name NHL Eastside Hockey Manager. It was based on Sports Interactive's Championship Manager 3
game engine and featured over 10 playable hockey leagues from around the world with a database of over 15,000 players and staff. The game was first released in stores only in Europe but was also available to be downloaded and bought online. A North American retail release of the game followed later in the year.

Sequel

NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005, was released in Europe in May 2005 and added new licensed leagues including the AHL and ECHL as well as introducing a host of new features such as training camps and a tactical 2D view. Other areas of the game, such as the interface, were upgraded based on the feedback received from the growing community around the game and the game database grew to include over 30,000 players and staff. The game engine and interface were developed further to create a common look and feel with one of Sports Interactive's popular football management games, Football Manager 2005
. A digital download version was again made available soon after the retail release. The game continues to grow, with the latest version containing 18 playable leagues from countries in North America and Europe.

The North American version of the game was released on September 27, 2005.
