| Nagash is a fictional character from Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy battlegame and universe. The Great Necromancer Nagash, the Accursed one, was foremost among his fellow priests and the most learned. Despite his high rank in the order of the priests, the mortuary priests, he coveted even greater power. After the death of his father, Khetep first of the 3rd dynasty of rulers in great Nehekhara and son of the renowned Queen Rasut, Nagash's older brother, Thutep, took to the throne, becoming the ruler of all Nehekhara. One night, as the clouds covered the sky, Nagash slew his own brother, entombing him, still alive in the tomb of their father. The next morning, his hands still covered with the blood of his brother, Nagash claimed the throne of Nehekhara for himself. Nagash's reign was a terrible time for the people of Nehekhara, as Nagash was a cruel and greedy king. Using his fell sorcery he conjured daemons to do his bidding. In this way he learned many dark secrets. In his frenzy of greed and egocentricism Nagash had built for himself a pyramid of black stone. It cost the lives of uncountable slaves, but the black pyramid of Nagash rose to shadow all others. Eventually seven kings from the other, lesser cities formed together to remove Nagash from his black throne. And the army of the seven kings rallied and moved forward to Khemri. But Nagash was not to be so easily disposed of. Using the dark magic he had learned from the daemons he had summoned he raised an army of the undead, a horde of skeletons to destroy the attacking armies. Although many fled before the sight of the dead army Nagash was defeated; but was not yet slain. He fled to the north east to plot his revenge against the lands of his birth. For hundreds of years the kings continued to rule Nehekhara much as they had before. In Lahmia the reigning queen embraced the evil teachings of Nagash. She drank from the elixir named after the fallen priest-king. In doing so she became the first true vampire. Fearful of the wrath of the Gods the current king, the famed King Alcadizaar made war on the twisted queen. The threat of Lahmia was crushed by a huge army mustered by King Alcadizaar. The queen fled Lahmia with a retinue of the others she had perverted into creatures of the night. Those who fled where met by Nagash in the mountains of the north, and he embraced them as spawns of his own corrupt magic. These vampires became his captains. Nagash sent these undying warriors to make war with Nehekhara, at their rear marched a mighty army of skeletons. But Nagash had underestimated his former countrymen. Alcadizaar the Conqueror was the greatest general of his age (the 6th dynasty of Nehekhara) and led a unified army against the undead invaders. After many years of bloody war the hordes of Nagash were pushed back. But Nagash again escaped his foul presence would taint the earth for time yet. His corrupt necromantic powers not yet as powerful as they would one day become. So bitter and evil was Nagash that he decided that if he was not allowed to rule all of Nehekhara then no-one could. He concluded it was better to slay everything in Nehekhara then see it ruled by the kings of Khemri. The first part of his plan was to pollute the river Vitea, who's life giving waters the people depended upon. After he had tainted the river it became black and foul, and has since been renamed the river mortis. Soon after the corruption of the Vitea Nagash began the second part of his foul plan, and pestilence ravaged the lands of Nehekhara. Alcadizaar was forced to watch as first those he loved died, including his wife and children. Then see his beloved kingdom crumble before him. When a new army of the undead invaded Nehekhara the meek defences put up to stop the invasion were easily thwarted and Alcadizaar himself was captured by the fell beasts. He was not executed though. Instead he was thrown into a cell to rot. It was now, with Alcadizaar imprisoned and Nehekhara on its knees that Nagash revealed the conclusion of his evil plans. He began to weave one of the most powerful spells ever to be attempted. At the pinnacle of his power Nagash unleashed a mighty wave of sourcerous power. His wave slew all it touched. Everything that lived in Nehekhara died before the foul might of Nagash. Nagash planned to use his necromantic powers to raise the entire population of Nehekhara as an unstoppable army, which he would use to conquer the entire world. There is little doubt he would have failed in this evil task if it had not been for Alcadizaar, the last living king of Nehekhara. He was mysteriously freed from his captivity by heavily robed and hunched figures (thought to possibly be the skaven; though how they survived Nagash's foul spell is disputed as is the existence of the skaven themselves). these figures forced a powerful blade into his hands.
