Natu (Naty ネイティ Neiti in Japan, also called Natu in Germany and France) is a tiny bird/psychic-type Pokémon. It is usually green. It has a red tail, red feet, a red feather on its head, a yellow beak, and yellow wings. Despite being Flying-type, it cannot learn the HM Fly. This is explained in its Pokédex data, which says that its wings are too small to be used for flying, so it hops to get from place to place. In the video games, it can also use Teleport to take the player back to the last Pokémon Center he/she visited.

The name "Natu" could be a play on the word native. Its name may also be a reference to Atu, an Aztec god. Atu is also the name of the first man of Samoan mythology. Natu is also Latin for birth.

Biology

Natu is always staring at something. If your eyes meet with its eyes, it will stare back intently at you. But if you move even slightly, it will hop away to safety.

Because its wings are not yet fully grown, it has to hop to get around. It usually forages on the ground for food but may, on rare occasions, hop onto branches to peck at shoots. It is extremely good at climbing tree trunks, and does like to eat these sproats. It has a highly developed jumping ability.

Availability

In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Natu can be caught in the small patch of grass outside the Ruins of Alph. One must travel through the lower areas of Union Cave to get to it.

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Natu can be caught in the Safari Zone, while in Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green, it can be caught in Ruin Valley.

In Pokémon XD, one can be snagged from Cipher Peon Romosh in the Phenac Training School.

==Anime Appearances== Natu's most notable appearance was in the episode Doin' What Comes Natu-rally!, where it belongs to a shy boy called McKenzie. After being with Ash and teaching his Natu (whom he nicknamed "Naughty") Foresight, he loses his shyness.

Another Natu appeared in a parody of Titanic set in space.

Manga Appearances

A Natu appears in Pokémon Adventures that is owned by Crystal. It appears in chapters 118, 121, 135, 165, and the lost chapter Escape.

In the TCG

Natu has appeared on five trading cards. In Neo Genesis, it is a common water Pokémon, while in Neo Discovery, Skyridge, EX Sandstorm, and EX Deoxys it is a common psychic card.
