Games - Neo Genesis

Neo Genesis is the ninth set of cards from the Pokémon Trading Card Game
. It comes after Gym Challenge
and before Neo Discovery
. Its symbol is a pair of stars, one in front of the other. The Neo part of its name is Latin for "new," since this set features Pokémon considered new during its release. The Genesis part is a reference to the Book of Genesis, as it is the first book of the Bible, and Neo Genesis is the first set to feature second-generation Pokémon. It could also mean that the second-generation Pokémon were created to make this set.

As mentioned above, this set introduces the second-generation Pokémon, those that come from the region of Johto
. With it comes two new Pokémon types
: Darkness and Metal, each with their own Energy card
s.

The design on the cards have also changed, now looking closer to the Japanese version. The Hit Points displayed on the upper-right is now smaller, and its color has changed from red to black. The statistics on the bottom of the card now have dune-shaped indentations in the background immediately behind each stat. The text reading "Basic Pokémon" is now directly under the HP (Hit Points) instead of the upper-left corner. The information about the Pokémon directly below the illustration is now in a parallelogram instead of a rectangle.

Notable cards

Ecogym prevents Energy card
s from getting discarded, instead going back into its player's hand.

Cleffa
's attack allows the user to shuffle his or her hand back into the deck and draw seven cards. This allows the player to quickly find any card he or she needs.

Focus Band gives its wearer a 50-50 chance that it survives an attack that would normally defeat it.

Gold Berry heals a Pokémon of damage between turns.

Meganium
has a Pokémon Power that doubles the amount of Grass Energy in play, allowing its user to power up his or her Pokémon extremely quickly.

Metal Energy makes attacks done to the holder do less damage. However, if the Pokémon holding Metal Energy is not Metal-type, it also does less damage when attacking.

Elekid
can do damage using no Energy and from the Bench (not actively fighting).

Murkrow
prevents its opponent from escaping while doing damage to the helpless Benched Pokémon. If the Pokémon directly against Murkrow is incapable of getting it out of the way, then Murkrow can slowly wither the opponent's entire Bench away.

Slowking
has a "Mind Games" Pokémon Power that requires the opponent to flip a coin if he or she ever uses a Trainer card
. A favorable coin flip means the opponent can use the Trainer card as usual, but an unfavorable one means Slowking's player can use it instead.

Sneasel
can potentially defeat any Pokémon in the game by the second turn, though one would have to be very lucky to accomplish that. However, it averages so much damage for so little Energy that it became the first card to be banned from official play.
