Nergal is the main villain of Fire Emblem: Rekka No Ken. He took control of the Black Fang to use it for his own selfish desires. He has the ability to absorb the quintessence, or life force, of people, which immediately causes their death. He uses this quintessence to create artificial beings, called morphs. Originally he wasn't evil, and was a good friend of the archsage Athos, but upon learning the secrets of quintessence his soul became twisted and dark, and Athos was forced to defeat him. He wasn't fully destroyed, though, and returned in the time of Eliwood to fulfill his ultimate evil plot; to absorb the quintessence of dragons and use it to become all-powerful.

Nergal desires to become completely invulnerable, and comes extremely close to this goal. However, he is finally defeated by Eliwood and his friends. Nergal belongs to a unique class called the Dark Druid, with extroordinarily high power and defences, with all other stats being high in addition. He attacks with the most powerful Dark magic in the game, Ereshkigal.
