Games - New Mombasa

New Mombasa is a fictional metropolis which figures prominently in the early levels of the video game Halo 2. Set in 2552, it is a far-future version of present-day Mombasa, and is located in the fictional East African Protectorate (EAP) in what is now Kenya. The focal point of the city is a space elevator near an artificial canal in the middle of the island-city.

Geography

The city is divided into two main sections, Old Mombasa and New Mombasa. Old Mombasa, which is located in mainland Africa, is more dilapidated and still retains much of its traditional and 21st-century architecture, retrofitted with future technology. New Mombasa, which occupies present-day Mombasa Island, has replaced the majority of the modern-day city with a monolithic 26th-century industrial cityscape designed to service the space elevator and handle its cargo traffic. The two sections of the city are connected by a mile-long cable-stayed bridge over Kilindini Harbor.

In the Campaign

Near the beginning of Halo 2, the Master Chief arrives in Old Mombasa to help the UNSC
liberate the city from Covenant invasion forces. After fighting through the maze-like streets of the mainland, the Master Chief traverses a beach and an underground highway system to get to the bridge to the island-city. After destroying the Covenant Scarab, the course of the battle turns and the High Prophet of Regret flees from Earth in his flagship. The slipspace rift that the ship opens subsequently destroys most of the city.

In Multiplayer

Three of the game's multiplayer maps are set in the area: Headlong, a construction area in New Mombasa; Turf, which is set in the narrow warrens of Old Mombasa and the crash site of a downed enemy scarab; and Terminal, which takes place near a maglev station in New Mombasa. Zanzibar's Wind Power Station is located several miles south of the area.

Speculation

There is speculation that Mombasa held some significance to the Forerunners which is why the Covenant attacked the city. The fact that the Prophet of Regret was able to jump straight to Delta Halo afterward indicates that something must have been found while in Mombasa(the Ark?), because the location of the Halos were a mystery to the Covenant. It is believed that the Scarabs were designed to be digging machines, and that they were digging for something in New Mombasa. There are 3 Scarabs in Halo 2, one in the campaign level Metropolis, one in the campaign level The Great Journey, and the other on the multiplayer map Turf. Many Scarabs have fallen in the narrow streets of Old Mombasa. What is very interesting is also the proximity of New Mombasa to the Great Rift Valley, the evolutionary "birthplace" of the Human race, from where the earliest Humans migrated out into the rest of Africa and eventually the world. If Humans can be seen as the descendants of, or in any way biologically related to the Forerunners, then it is a possibility that an extremely ancient Forerunner facility of some kind is nearby (again, the Ark?).
