Nigel Lythgoe (born 1949) is a television/film director and producer. He is best known as an executive producer (along with Simon Fuller) for the hit series American Idol and Pop Idol. He is the director of American Idol.

He was the main judge on the ITV Show Popstars; the TV show that spawned the ill-fated Hear'say and led the way to a host of other singing contents such as Pop Idol. He also hosted short-lived 2002 television series The Enemy Within (quiz). In 1976 he was a floor director of the television series The Muppet Show.

His relative, Simon Lythgoe (who is the chief lighting technician for The Lord of the Rings films, not to be confused with Simon Fuller, Simon Jones or Simon Cowell) is also a producer of American Idol
