| Ninja looting is when a player in a MMORPG steals treasure that was dropped from a fallen enemy, also known as loot, without first asking the other participants of the battle for permission to do so. Grabbing small treasures dropped from easy-to-kill enemies is usually not considered ninja looting. However, where the line goes between ordinary looting and ninja looting depends on the group of people you are playing with. Players that are caught ninja looting are usually disliked by other players and are often never invited to raid or group with that party again. Victims can post notices on the game forums as an alert to others in the game. A rather famous example of this from the game Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) has become an internet phenomenon of sorts, especially at YTMND. An angry conversation over someone Ninja Looting a rare item called a cloudsong sparks a stream of profanity and much unintentional hilarity. This was originally falsely attributed to be from a dispute over World of Warcraft (WoW) but the man exclaiming "I rule the VNBoards", in addition to the fact that there is no item called "cloudsong" in WoW, but there is in DAoC (where it is a particularly rare item) clearly indicates that the dispute is about the latter. Games can include mechanics to reduce ninja looting, or at least make it clearly apparent. An example of this is World of Warcraft's "Master Looter" looting scheme, in which only the party or raid leader can loot items, and assigns them to other players, which prevents group members from ninja looting. However, the group must have a trustworthy leader, because if the leader decides to ninja loot an item, nothing will stop this from happening.
