| Number Munchers is an educational/edutainment computer game in the Munchers series produced by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium (MECC) for several operating systems. Designed to teach basic math skills, it was popular among American schoolchildren in the 1980s and 1990s and was the recipient of several awards. Gameplay was essentially that of the other Munchers games. Specific to Number Munchers was the five modes of play: Multiples, Factors, Primes, Equality, and Inequality. In the Multiples number, the muncher has to munch all numbers which are multiples of the number given; if the number was 3 they must eat all 6's, 9's, and 12's, but avoid numbers such as 7. Factors is the opposite: If given the number 12 they would eat all 1's, 2's 3's 4's and 6's, but avoid all others. In prime mode, likewise, only prime numbers are edible, and the equality and inequality modes have you eat all numbers which satisfy or do not satisy an expression such as 2+4. Gameplay began with four munchers. If an incorrect answer is choosen, you lose one life. In addition, five different Troggles appear throught the game. On levels 1, 2, and 3, there is only one Troggle on the grid. A second Troggle appears from level 4 and a third appears from level 8. After approximately level 18, gameplay speeds up, making it more difficult. Safety squares would pop up, identified by four small white rectangles on the corner of each square. If a troggle would be in the path of the square, it would turn in a different direction. A life is sacrificed if the Troggle eats the Muncher. Reggies were magenta in color and simply moved in a line unless if a safety square was in the way, appearing from Level 1. Bashfuls were green and basically had random movement on the gameboard. Helpers were green with a space mask and would eliminate all correct answers when passing over a square, making level clearing easier. In contrast, purple-colored Workers would add new problems, correct or incorrect over blank squares making it more difficult. Smarties were green with large teeth and attempted to run directly at the Muncher. Most players found the Primes mode to be easiest, as the highest prime at the most difficult level was only 47, thus requiring players to only memorize the short list of 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, and 47. This was in contrast to Multiples or Factors, where the specific number which the player had to match for changed from level to level (e.g. in one level, the player must match for multiples of 4, while in the next, the player must match for multiples of 6). Also, Primes mode always had single numbers within grid squares and did not require the evaluation of an expression involving a binary operation such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
