In the cosmology of the Planescape campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the Outlands, also known as the Concordant Opposition, is the Outer Plane where the souls of people of Neutral alignment are sent after death. The Outlands play an important role in the Planescape setting, because anyone can enter or leave the Outlands at their whim. Parallels between the Outlands and Switzerland can be drawn, because it is popular as a meeting place for treaties between the powers. The Outlands are also home to the gate-towns. At the center of the Outlands is the Spire, atop which Sigil can be seen.Gate-townsGate-towns are settlements which are built around a permanent portal to a certain Outer Plane on the Great Ring. Gate-towns are important strategically because they provide a (relatively) stable way to enter a desired Outer Plane. The gate-towns reflect the plane that they lead to, for example, Xaos (or aXos, soaX, etc.) is a town where everything changes from one moment to the next. Even the location of the portal to Limbo changes every day — not that there's any regularity to daybreak and nightfall in Xaos. The character of Xaos mirrors what the plane of Limbo is like.MagicThe closer to the Spire, the harder it is to use magic-related powers. Most of the towns, portals, realms, etc. are located far enough not to suffer from this impedings. At 500 miles from the Spire, illusions no longer work. At the very base of the Spire, absolutely all magic (except maybe that of an over-god, such as Ao) is neutralized.RealmsThe Outlands is the location of a number of godly realms, including the god Boccob's realm of The Library of Lore, the nature god Obad-Hai's realm of The Hidden Wood, the illithid deity Ilsensine's realm of the Caverns of Thought, the naga deity Shekinester's realm of The Court of Light, the cheif giant deity Annam's realm of the Hidden Realm, the dragon deity Chronepsis' realm the Mausoleum of Chronepsis, Gond's realm of Wonderhome, Thoth's realm of Thoth's Estate, the Norns' realm of The Well of Urd, Yen-Wang-Yeh's realm of The Palace of Judgement, Gilean' realm of The Hidden Vale, Shinare's realm of the Scales of Wealth, the lizardfolk deity Semuanya's realm of Semuanya's Bog, the beholder deity Gzemnid's Realm, the halfling goddess Sheela Peryroyl's realm of Flowering Hill, Tvashtri's realm of Tvashtri's Laboratory, the goddess Istus' realm of the Web of Fate, the goddess Ulaa's realm of The Steel Hills, and the god Zilchus's realm of The Marketplace Eternal.Three dwarven gods (Vergadain, Dugmaren Brightmantle, and Dumathoin) share the realm of The Dwarven Mountain on the plane of the Outlands.
