Games - Pangya

PangYa (also known as Albatross18: Realms of PangYa) is an online multiplayer casual golf simulation game designed by a Korean development company, Ntreev Soft and published by Korean online game publisher HanbitSoft
. Albatross18: Realms of PangYa is the official English version of PangYa, and is published by GameFactory.

The full game is free to download, however certain special items for the game (such as clothes for characters, new equipment and new playable characters) can only be purchased with real money.

PangYa currently has servers in Korea, Japan, Thailand, Brazil, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Singapore and U.S.A., with plans to expand to more English speaking countries. A fair number of players outside of the current server regions play on either the Korean or Japanese servers.

Gameplay

PangYa's gameplay is designed similar to most other golf games. Power and accuracy of a shot are determined by a meter located at the bottom of the screen, using the "three-click method": one click to activate the meter's bar; one click to set power; and one click to set accuracy. Should the player hit the ball with perfect (or almost-perfect) accuracy, the shot is called a "PangYa". Should the player do this with a "power shot" (see below) combined with maximum power on their tee shot, the shot is a "Super PangYa" and doubles any bonuses achieved during the shot from sources such as Overdrive, Nice Recovery, etc.

Spin and curve can be applied to a shot using the golf ball icon located to the left of the power meter. By repositioning the blue dot on the icon, a ball can be given topspin, backspin, draw, fade, or a combination of the above. If a player holds down the proper arrow key while making a shot with spin or curve and hits a PangYa, the shot becomes a Powerspin or Powercurve. These shots can greatly increase a player's effectiveness; for example, a shot with Powerbackspin will stop after one bounce and travel a short distance in reverse, making it ideal for hitting and sticking on difficult greens.

After each shot, a power gauge near the player's picture, located in the top-left or -right corner of the screen, fills slightly. This bar is divided into three sections. When one section of the bar is filled, the player can use a "power shot", which adds 10 yards of distance to that shot and allows the player to perform special shots. Hitting a PangYa will fill the power gauge faster.

Special shots can easily tame the most difficult of holes. To use them, a player must activate a power shot and input the correct combination of arrow keys during the downswing of the shot. The Tomahawk shot requires the "up" and "down" arrow keys to be tapped in that order during the shot. If performed correctly, the ball will become a flaming missile -- hence the name "Tomahawk" -- and land almost directly where aimed without bouncing. The other special shot, "Cobra", will fly very close to the ground for most of the shot, arcing up and down at the end. Such a low flight path means wind barely affects the shot and low-hanging obstacles can be easily avoided.

Courses

All courses in Albatross18 are rated either "A" (easy), "AA" (moderate) or "AAA" (difficult). In PangYa, the "A"s are replaced with stars.

Blue Lagoon

This simple, tropical-themed course is designed for beginners. The course is mostly surrounded by water and sand, but wide fairways, easy pin placements and a low amount of obstacles make it fairly easy for novices to play. Some risky shortcuts are available for the more experienced players to take.

Available in Albatross18 and all versions of PangYa.

Blue Water

Blue Water follows the same course as Blue Lagoon, except with different pin placements and more obstacles. For example, Hole 6 of Blue Lagoon is a straight Par 3 over a body of water; however, in Blue Water, that same body of water is home to a massive rock formation, making a straight shot all but impossible. The player must think more about shot placement in Blue Water rather the actual shot.

Available in Albatross18 and all versions of PangYa.

Sepia Wind

Sepia Wind is an autumn-themed course dotted with windmills and trees. Power is required as some drives require length to clear imposing forests and sand traps. Clever players can use the many cart paths to add distance to their drives.

Available in Albatross18 and all versions of PangYa.

White Wiz (North Wiz)

White Wiz (North Wiz in Albatross18) is a Christmas-themed course, covered in ice and snow. The snowy rough is more punishing than on other courses, meaning more power is needed if you intend on going off the fairway. White Wiz introduces a unique terrain type: ice. Unlike bunkers or rough, ice does not impose a penalty on distance while taking a shot. It does, however, reduce the player's control over the shot. Bouncing the ball off of ice has the same effect as bouncing off a cart path, enabling high Overdrive possibilities. Although the course is festively themed, the course is always available to play on at any time of the year.
