Patch Tuesday is the second Tuesday of each month.

Starting with Windows Me, Microsoft included an "Automatic Update" system, that would check for patches to Windows and its components which Microsoft would release intermittently. This system has since been upgraded to also check for updates other Microsoft products, including Office.

After a series of highly publicized security flaws, Microsoft made a major commitment to making all of its products more secure, with Windows being the highest priority. As part of this process, it began releasing Windows patches on a consistent schedule, the second Tuesday of the month.

Some system administrators have also been known to call this day "Black Tuesday."
