Games - Pirates of the Burning Sea

Pirates of the Burning Sea (abbreviated to PotBS) is a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game
(MMORPG) currently under development by Flying Lab Software
. The game is set in the 18th century Caribbean and will combine role playing and naval combat. Pirates of the Burning Sea is expected to be released in 2006.

Development

PotBS has been in development since 2002. Public beta testing began in December 2005, though currently beta testing is by invitation only. The game's website has an application form for those wishing to take part in beta testing (see external links section below).

The game's US release will initially use Valve Software's Steam
system for distributing and updating the game software, billing, and authentication. A boxed version may be sold in stores after the initial release, which will also use Steam.

The game will also be released in Europe, Russia (where it will be published by Akella
) and Asia.

Gameplay

Players in PotBS will captain their own ship as a pirate, an adventurer (a combination of privateer and merchant) or a naval officer. Characters who are adventurers or naval officers will be either British, French or Spanish.

At release, PotBS's gameplay will be focus on real time naval combat, with players controlling their ship's heading, speed, special abilities and attacks. Though PotBS is not a full simulation of Age of Sail combat, wind is important, with ships performing differently at diffent angles to the wind and real-world naval tactics being possible in the game. A typical battle is expected to take ten to fifteen minutes to complete, with larger battles with multiple ships on each side taking longer.

The game will include both PvE and PvP
combat, both either as a part of missions or ad-hoc encounters. Some missions will follow an ongoing story as your character develops. A focus of PvP combat will be conquering enemy nations' ports. Players not wishing to take part in PvP combat will be able to avoid PvP areas.

Customization

Avatars will be highly customizable, with a similar range of options to those in City of Heroes.

The game will also feature user designed content. Players will be able to use standard graphics software to design flag and sail decals that will be available to them in the game. Submitted content is peer-reviewed, and then reviewed by the Flying Lab staff for quality and appropriateness.

Players with 3D modelling skills who are willing to meet the stringent criteria set for ship models, will be able to create 3D ship models using software such as Maya or GMax and submit them to be included in the game. Several user-created ships have already been accepted and integrated, and can be spotted in screenshots shown on game sites and the official site.
