Poliwrath (ニョロボン Nyorobon in Japan, Quappo in Germany and Tartard in France) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise. It is a Stage 2 Water/Fighting-dual-type Pokémon.

Poliwrath's name is composed of poli, which is derived from polliwog, and wrath, meaning "anger" due to its Fighting-type and ferocious attitude. The Japanese version of the name is probably onomatopoeic: "Nyoro nyoro" describes "wiggling" or "squirming" or "slithering", which is how a tadpole or a "Poliwag", its most basic form, would move.

Characteristics

Poliwrath looks like a beefy boxer with large muscles and a distinctive spiral belly. It is mostly blue with its eyes coming from the top of its head. Poliwrath is strong, tenacious Pokémon. It swims in a way similar to how humans do, performing the freestyle and breast-stroke swimming methods; it trains very often every day and can swim faster than any human being. It also possesses certain hypnotic abilities.

In the Pokémon video games

Poliwrath is not found in the wild in any of the Pokémon games and must be evolved from Poliwhirl with a Water Stone item. Poliwrath is used by the Gym Leader Chuck from Cianwood City in Pokémon Gold and Silver. It is Chuck's favorite Pokémon and arguably the toughest to defeat. Similar to Gloom's evolutionary choice, the player may choose either to evolve his or her Poliwhirl into Poliwrath or Politoed. Politoed, unlike Poliwrath, is not partially Fighting-type.

In Pokemon XD one could be snagged from Cipher Admin Gorigan at Citadark Isle.

In other media

Firstly, a trainer used one in a battle against Ash Ketchum's Charizard (Episode 107, "Charizard Chills!"), one was used in a Fishing Contest to capture a Seaking (Episode 170, "Hook, Line & Stinker!"). As mentioned above, Chuck uses Poliwrath in his Gym Match against. Lastly, a trainer that Misty challenged had one. All of the other roles Poliwrath plays are cameos.

Poliwrath appears often as a Stage 2 Water-type, but also appears occasionally as a Stage 2 Fighting-type. It has appeared in the following sets:
