Professor Birch (Odamaki-Hakase in the original Japanese version), is a character in the world of Pokémon. He is considered the "Pokémon Professor" in the Hoenn region. Unlike other Pokémon scientists, he is known for his field work, rather than, in his own words, remaining "cooped up in my lab all day". He is also responsible for giving new Pokémon trainers one of the three Hoenn starter Pokémon, Treecko, Mudkip, and Torchic. He is also notorious for his reckless driving.

Anime appearances

Professor Birch is also known for his field work in the Animé, though as Brendan has no role in the animé it is unknown if he has any children.

He is first referred at the end of the Silver Conference, when Harrison tells Ash about Hoenn. He first makes an actual appearance in the first Advance Generation episode, and is the one to give May her first Pokémon, Torchic.

He turns up at various points in the Hoenn saga doing field work.
