Games - Quizo

Quizo (or, more commonly, Quizzo) is a pub quiz or trivia game popular in many bars in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area of the United States, although it is now spreading to other regions sometimes using different names. Rules differ depending on the venue, but it is generally played by teams of 4 to 8 players, consisting of three or four rounds of ten questions each. Some Quizzos are written quizzes, others are verbal, and others are a combination thereof (for example, the third round is the speed round in which the questions are handed out on a preprinted sheet; in all other rounds the questions are read over a loudspeaker and written down to be handed in). Usually, each team can "joker" one round, which doubles their point score for that round. Other variations forego the joker in favor of other elements. For example, a final round billed as the "Ragin' Round Robin" is unique to McCrossen's Tavern, a venue in the Fairmount-Spring Garden neighborhood that has hosted Quizzos since 1997.

There are many establishments which host Quizzos, using a variety of different rules and point calculations. For example, at Fergie's Pub, the first place team gets a certificate worth $50 off the bar tab; the second place team receives a $25 certificate. At the Locust Bar, where Kevin Oliver is the quizmaster, the first place team wins a $30 gift certificate and the second place team gets a $15 gift certificate, but there is also a shout-out section after the game where a few sets of "bar crap" are given out. At Bridget Foy's, the prize is $25 off your bar tab; Jen Oliver hosts the Quizzo there. Jimmy Lamb hosts at Schileen's Pub in Westville, NJ, where there are 4 rounds of questions and the winning team gets a $25 gift certificate. A 50/50 raffle is also held, where the winning ticket holder gets half the money from that night, but is also asked one question in order to win all the money that has accumulated over the weeks of wrong answers. There are dozens of bars in the Philadelphia area (and outside) that host Quizzo games; many can be found at .

Some practices are common among Quizzo-hosting establishments, including recommended tipping etiquette for a winning team. Winning teams often find themselves the recipients of a sizable discount because of their trivia prowess, but the local custom is to tip the bartenders and servers based on the original amount of their check, rather than on the amount after their winnings are deducted.

The first Quizzo was played at New Deck Tavern in 1992. The concept was introduced to Philadelphia by Pat Hines, after he took it over from someone else who brought it over from Ireland, where it is called "Pub Quiz." Hines owns the copyright on the use of "Quizo" with one "z."
