- Protagonist - The main protagonist is the character directly under the player's control. RPG plot focusses around this character's quest or goals. In fantasy settings the protagonist often is the allied character who uses a sword as the main weapon.
- Antagonist - The main antagonist is the game's main villain. This character is often attempting to destroy or take over the world.
- Love interest - This is the main character's love interest. Often the plot will force the player to make a decision between saving this character and a group of non-player characters.
Character classes
- Pyromancer - The pyromancer is a magician who uses fire to deal damage.
- Healer - The healer uses primarily protective and restorative spells.
- Tank - The tank is a warrior with heavy armor who is able to take and receive large amounts of damage as a front line fighter.
Locations
Many cities and regions are considered "standards" in any far reaching RPG. These locations are often exagerated or highly stylized versions of their real-life counterparts.
- Medieval Kingdom - Most often in Fantasy settings. In some RPGs the entire adventure may take place within a medieval setting.
- Slum - Commonly a starting point for the character or story.
- Wasteland - Often the entire world in post-apocalyptic RPGs can be considered a wasteland.
