Rayman is an anthropomorphic video game character, created by the French game company Ubisoft and used in a video game series published worldwide on a variety of platforms. Ubisoft in mid-'90s was looking for a mascot to compete with Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario. The first appearance of Rayman was in an Atari Jaguar 2D side-scrolling platform game. Later, Ubisoft released 3D games of Rayman, also platformers, which were well-received by the critics and public.

Little is known about Rayman's origin or ancestry. It is said that, after a really stormy night, he was found sleeping by fishermen on the beach of the Sea of Lums in the Glade of Dreams (the setting of the games).

Rayman's World

This is where the first Rayman game takes place. It is made up of 6 lands and is kept at peace by the great Protoon. Rayman's world is part of the Glade of Dreams (or, alternatively, the Glade of Dreams itself).

Glade of Dreams

Rayman is supposed to live in a world called the Glade of Dreams. The Glade of Dreams is an island, surrounded by a sea, which is called the Sea of Lums. The island consists of a variety of terrains, including swamps, gigantic mountains, waterfalls, bays and forests. The Rayman 2 game takes place here.

Characters

Rayman, a limbless man with hair that can turn into a helicopter and the protagonist of the games.
Ly the Fairy, a cat-like fairy made by Polokus, the spirit of the world, with only one mission: to help the limbless hero Rayman. Very sweet-tempered, Ly is Rayman's helpful girlfriend who can unlock paths to new worlds. Appears in Rayman: The Great Escape, Rayman: Revolution, Rayman DS and Rayman 3.
Globox
is Rayman's best friend and trusty side kick, and the father of at least 650 kids.
Murfy
, a greenbottle that frequently appears as Rayman's advisor.
Teensies are who Rayman rescues on his journeys. They are small and have large noses, and argue constantly about which one of them is king.
Knaaren
, warriors who are very dangerous!

Future games

In Rayman 3, the character Murfy disappears, saying, "See you in Rayman 4!"

Rayman's creator, Michel Ancel, has confirmed that future games are in the works. Ubisoft started work on the next Rayman title, tentatively called Rayman 4, before Rayman 3 was released. They are planning to release Rayman 4 "before 2007". This game might be Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge, which was released in March 2005 as a Game Boy Advance game. It was supposed that Rayman 4 would give more clues about Rayman's origins, however this rumor was in fact spread from speculation in the Rayman forums; The press thought that the people speculating were official UbiSoft staff.
