Games - Rise of Tyrants

Rise of Tyrants is a browser-based
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game
. It was created by Dennis Field, a college freshman at IUPUI. The game was programmed in PHP, using SQL databases for storing player information.

Origin

Dennis Field, who also goes under the names of fury, flurffmeister, and refreshx, created the game in 2004 after becoming tired of the monotonous play of other MMORPGs such as Kings of Chaos and Dark Throne
. The game officially began development on August 23. By September 3, the game was fully functional.

Rise of Tyrants was originally almost completely based on Kings of Chaos, which in turn was based on Outwar
. Over the first few months of the game, new features were constantly added, making the game more original, and in the eyes of many, more interesting than its predecessors.

Popularity and Economy

The game is free to play and supported by advertising and donations. There are over 3,000 active players. Growth of the game is solely word-of-mouth, by being offered the incentive of gaining an officer in the game. If active, officers can give the original referrer extra attack turns, which are used to steal gold from other players.

Overview

The game setting is in a futuristic fantasy planet recovering from a nuclear holocaust. Reigning this planet are the four races: Humans, Terrans, Minotaurs, Drones. Each of the races contain a unique 25% bonus to one of four areas: turn-based income, covert effectiveness, attack effectiveness, and defense effectiveness, respectively. The player selects one race and is placed in command of an army consisting solely of this race. The basic objective is to build the most effective army with virtual soldiers and weapons using gold, the in-game currency. This is accomplished by one of two methods: by making virtual attacks to steal gold from other armies, or by recruiting and producing virtual soldiers to earn more gold every turn.

Gameplay

Game rounds are separated into ages, each lasting between one and two months. At the beginning of an age, all players start at the same status in order to give all players an equal chance at the top ranks. Game turns occur every 15 minutes and distribute unit production, income from soldiers, and attack turns. Purchases, training, and attacks may be made instantly regardless of game turns. Ranking updates occur every game turn and are reflective of the army with the most well balanced strengths.
