| In the fictional anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ritsuko Akagi (赤木リツコ Akagi Ritsuko) is NERV's head scientist. She is the daughter of Naoko Akagi, the developer of the MAGI supercomputer. Her personality is best described as lonely, cool and intelligent; fittingly, she is a woman with great affinity with cats and a strong dedication to her work. Additionally, she is a natural brunette who bleaches her hair. As head scientist, she is involved in the repairs and maintenance of Tokyo-3's defences against the Angels, particularly the Evas. Also, her coolness can be clearly seen when contrasted against Misato's hot-headness during battles. Her occasional jibes at Misato are a source of comic relief in the series. In flashbacks, it is revealed that she was one of Misato's first friends in university, following the Second Impact. Ritsuko was also friendly with Kaji, and jokingly flirted with him (frequently misinterpreted by fans as evidence of a past romance). Along with Gendo and Fuyutsuki, she's the only person at NERV fully aware of the Evas' true nature and the purpose of the Instrumentality Project. Like Gendou and unlike Misato, Ritsuko is willing to sacrifice the Eva pilots if the situation appears to warrant it. It is revealed in the later episodes that Ritsuko was romantically involved with Gendou Ikari. She felt betrayed by Gendou when she eventually realized that Gendou was using her (mirroring her own mother's tragic history). In revenge, she destroyed the dummy plug system before the eyes of a horrified Misato and Shinji. She was shot dead at the End of Evangelion movie, when she tried to activate the self-destruction capabilities of Tokyo-3 to stop Gendo from initiating the Third Impact. She failed when Caspar, the third MAGI computer which contained Naoko Akagi's brain, overrode the command. She was then shot and killed by Gendo. The breaking up of her friendship with Misato and Kaji can be seen as a side theme of the series. Due to their different agendas (Kaji and Misato wanted to find out the truth, while Ritsuko worked to conceal it), the friendship, which started during their university days, died out soon after Misato's discovery of Ritsuko's part in NERV's treachery. Manga versionIn the manga, she has a noticeable disdain of Rei, possibly stemming from the jealousy she felt of Gendo's care for Rei. In fact, during one of Rei's medical checkups, she loses control after Rei rebukes her and tries to strangle her with her stethoscope. Realising that she was acting like her mother before her, she manages to stop in time, but not before being totally embarrassed by her action.Akagi, Ritsuko Akagi, Ritsuko [ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for Ritsuko Akagi ] | Searches on eBay |
