Games - Rolf Landale

Rolf Landale (Japanese: ユーシス) is the main character and protagonist in the Phantasy Star II computer role-playing game. In the game, Rolf is an agent of the Motavian government, living and operating out of the planet's capital, Paseo. His direct superior is the Commander of Motavia.

Early life

Unbeknownst to Rolf, he is a descendant of Queen Alis Landale, the Palman heroine who defeated Dark Force
in AW 342. He has dreams of this battle every night, though he does not know who the combatants are.

Little is known about Rolf's life prior to AW 1284. However, it is known that in AW 1274, he was aboard a spaceship with his family and members of an anti-Mother Brain resistance group. In a situation similar to the murder of the Palman royal family in AW 844, the ship was destroyed during flight by Mother Brain but was made to look like an accident. Rolf was saved from death by Lutz, who (unknown to Mother Brain) protected the boy from being harmed in the explosion. Following this "accident," Mother Brain issued a command forbidding space flight in the Algol
system.

Phantasy Star II

In the beginning of Phantasy Star II, Rolf wakes up from a nightmare in which he sees a young girl (Alis Landale) battling a demon (Dark Force
). He recalls how he has the same nightmare every night, and he is always powerless to intervene while the demon continually strikes the girl. Concluding that he should not worry about dreams, he goes to the Central Tower, the center of Motavia's government, where he has worked for two years.

At the Central Tower Rolf talks to his superior, the Commander of Motavia, who briefs him on his new assignment. Rolf is ordered to go to the Biosystems Lab, the site of a massive outbreak of biomonsters two years prior, and return to the Commander with the lab's recorder. After completing this mission, Rolf is sent to Climatrol
for a follow-up investigation. There, Rolf and friends confront Neifirst
, but they must flee the scene without Nei.

Rolf and his associates are branded criminals and accused of sabotaging Mother Brain. In spite of them taking action to avoid a catastrophic flood on Motavia, the party is captured and held in the prison satellite Gaira while awaiting their execution. While they attempt to escape, the satellite malfunctions and begins to head toward the planet Palma. The satellite crashes into the planet and destroys it, but the party is rescued by the space pirate Tyler and brought back to Paseo, where Rolf speaks with the Commander.

The Commander gives Rolf access to the last (legal) functioning spaceship in Algol, which the party uses to travel to Dezolis. There, they travel to the Esper Mansion and meet Lutz, who reveals that it was he who rescued Rolf from the accident in AW 1274, and that Rolf is a descendant of Alis Landale. Lutz also provides the party with information and the Aeroprism, with which they can find the towers housing eight of the Nei items (unique, powerful weapons and armor).

After collecting the Nei items, the party returns to Lutz, who gives Rolf the Nei Sword. Lutz tells the party about Mother Brain's arrival in Algol and tells Rolf that he must go to Noah, the "final battlefield," and defeat Mother Brain. On Noah, Rolf and friends confront and defeat Dark Force
and Mother Brain. They then confront and defeat the Earthmen, the people who created Mother Brain and destroyed Palma. The outcome of this battle is not shown however, the party's survival of this bleak battle is up to the player's interpretation.

Post-Phantasy Star II

Little information is provided as to what Rolf did during the time of the Great Collapse (or even if he made it back from Noah alive). It can be postulated from Phantasy Star IV that Rolf (or one of his allies) returns to the Esper Mansion at some point after having defeated Dark Force, Mother Brain and the Earthmen; in AW 2284, Rune (the fifth-generation Lutz) recalls that "the first generation of Lutz stored the Aero-Prism in the Soldiers' Temple" on Motavia.
