Rival Schools

Roy is introduced in Rival Schools as a cocky foreign exchange student. He is about to leave for the US with Tiffany Lords
when his father calls him and asks him to investigate the kidnappings happening at other schools. Joined by Tiffany and Boman Delgado
, Roy leads an investigation to find out the persons behind the kidnapping. This investigation leads him and his friends to Justice High School, where they were defeated, and turned into brainwashed slaves to the school. Eventually, through the help of Batsu Ichimonji
and other students, Roy and his friends manage to snap out of their brainwashing and help bring down Justice High School's plans.

Though he initally saw the investiagation to get revenge on the Japanese (his grandfather had been shot in the leg by a Japanese soldier in World War II, something which left Roy bitter about the country) and prove American superiority, the experience humbled Roy quite a bit. His experience, as well as being freed by and working with the students from Taiyo High School, led to Roy putting aside his hatred for the Japanese (aside from having a friendly rivalry with Batsu) and working toward a goal of peace and cooperation.

Project Justice

At the start of the game, Roy is initally unplayable. According to the intro for the Pacific High story, Roy and Tiffany have returned to the United States while Boman is left to help around the Japanese branch of Pacific. Upon hearing about the new conflict brewing between the schools, Roy and Tiffany return to Japan, joining Boman, Ran
and Iincyo in finding out the organizer of the chaos. When the investiagation ends after the destruction of Justice High School, Roy and Tiffany again go back to the United States, with Roy even more determined to realize his dream of changing the world.

Also, an alternate version the Taiyo High story has Roy appearing to help out his rival Batsu and the students at Taiyo High. However, this version of events is not considered canon.

Trivia

  • Like many Capcom games being localized for the U.S. market, some of the content in Rival Schools were either altered or censored to avoid any controversy. In the case of Roy, it was his anti-Japan sentiment. Even though he doesn't say anything offensive, he does say rude things about Japan and it's people. Moreover, Roy also says a few expletives in English which are also written in English. As a result, some of his quotes were edited and removed in the U.S. version. However, the japanese voice overs are kept intact. This makes the japanese voice not matching the written text. For example, in the American version, the voice over calls Hideo a "Japanese businessman," while the text translation has him calling Hideo a "geek." Because Roy no longer hates everything Japan in Project Justice, his quotes were left unaltered.
  • There is very striking evidence that Roy was created as knock-off of (or tribute to) SNK's Terry Bogard
. Roy dresses very similarly to Terry (both wear a red vest, white shirt and blue jeans), and many of his moves are knock-offs of Terry's moves (such as Roy's Touchdown Wave being a stationary version of Terry's Power Wave).
