RuneScape
skills are abilities that enable players to carry out various tasks. Some skills are members-only, and some skills are only in newer versions of the game. Many of the higher-level abilities in each skill are reserved for members-only. Players gain experience in a skill when they perform tasks related to that skill. A player's amount of experience points (exp or xp) determines the level of that skill. New abilities are given to the player when they reach certain levels. Higher level abilities, in turn, give more experience points to compensate for the roughly quadratic increase in experience needed to reach each new level.

Combat



Combat is arguably the most important skill in RuneScape. A player's "combat level" is calculated from seven skills: attack, strength, defence, hitpoints, magic, prayer, and ranged. The maximum combat level in RuneScape Classic is 123, and the maximum in RuneScape is 126.

Combat level, in RuneScape , can also be determined by your combat type. Different combat types have their combat level determines by different skills:
  • Warrior: Attack and strength
  • Mage: Magic
  • Ranger: Ranged
Prayer, defence, and hitpoints will always influence combat level.

Different fighting styles train different things. Accurate trains attack, aggressive trains strength and defensive trains defence. Controlled trains all three. All options give a portion of the Experience you get to Hitpoints.

Melee:
  • Accurate reduces a player's chance of hitting 0 on the opponent.
  • Aggressive increases amount of damage a player does to an opponent when battling.
  • Defensive decreases damage done to the player by an opponent.
  • Controlled gives a third of the normal experience received to attack, strength, and defence, allowing melee fighters to gain experience in all three skills at the same time.
Ranged:
  • Accurate decreases player's chances of shooting a 0 on the monster or opponent
  • Rapid increases damage-rate speed on the opponent
  • Long ranged increases shooting range and gains exp. for both defense and range
The Combat Triangle is a chart of strengths and weaknesses. Magic will tend to beat melee, ranged will tend to beat magic, and melee will tend to beat ranged.

Melee based combat is the simplest form of combat a player can choose to specialize in; those who do so are named "warriors".

  • Attack level determines the chance of a successful strike, as well as what melee weapons players can wield.
  • Strength level determines determines the maximum damage a player can deal. Some weapons are tied to this stat as well, such as the Barrow Weapons Dharok and Torag, and the Dragon Battleaxe.
  • Defence level increases the chance of receiving no damage during an opponent's attack. Defence also determines what kinds of armour you can wear.

Once considered only a supplement to Melee, Magic is now a battle skill in its own right. Mages may wield various Staffs & Battlestaffs and wands to assist them. Mages may even have some types of Armour specific to them. Magic is a skill intertwined with the skill of Runecrafting

Mages has an advantage over warriors as melee armour gives negative magic defence and mages are able to use spells such as Entangle to bind a warrior in place for a period of time.

Magical attacks are marked by the use of Runestones as a form of ammunition. With the appropriate runes and skill level, players may cast a variety of spells. However, a player may also weild an Elemental Staff to take the place of either Fire, Water, Earth or Air runes. These staffs never run out of the rune power it holds. It's like having an everlasting pile of runes. Many higher level spells are available only to members, such as the Elemental Waves. All spells are composed of one or more types of Elemental Runestones, which give the spell its elemental alignment, and a "binding" rune, which gives the spell its type. Each type of binding rune is associated with one type of spell.

Apart from combat, Magic can also be used to teleport to set locations at higher levels, or enchant amulets, necklaces, and magical rings which enhance other abilities. It is of interesting note that a player using a teleport spell can not cast it beyond level 20 Wilderness.

At level 66 magic, members may enter the Magic guild in Yanille.
