Saffron City is a fictional large metropolis in the center of Kanto.

Gyms

Two Gyms exist in Saffron City. One is the official Pokemon League Gym, a group of Psychic trainers led by Sabrina. Next to it stands the Fighting Dojo, an unofficial gym made up of Fighting trainers.
It was suggested by city residents in the games that the Fighting Dojo was once an official League Gym, but lost its status to the rival Psychic gym.

Silph Co.

Silph Co. is the leading manufacturer of Pokemon technology. It is this company that produces the Pokeballs used by trainers to capture Pokemon, and they are constantly looking for ways to improve upon them.
Their status made them a target in the Red/Blue/Yellow games, in which Team Rocket orchestrated the takeover of their offices. However, the player drives them out of the city, and the President reveals the top-secret development Team Rocket was after: the Master Ball, which can catch any Pokemon without fail.
In Gold/Silver/Crystal, Silph Co. has increased security, and the player can not see the upper floors.

Magnet Train

In the Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions, Saffron has a station for the Magnet Train which runs between there and Goldenrod City in the Johto Region.

Demographics

In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the city had a total population of 42. This makes it the second largest city in Kanto, after Celadon City. Saffron and Celadon form the second most populated metropolitan area in the Pokémon World (the most populated is Lilycove City).

Super Smash Bros.

In Super Smash Bros., Saffron City is a stage. It is played on top of 3 buildings. The middle building is tallest, and Pokémon, like Electrode, Chansey and Venusaur come out of the building and hurt any player their attacks hit.
