Games - Salamence

Salamence (Boomander ボーマンダ Bōmanda in Japanese, Brutalanda in German and Drattak in French) is a fictional character from the Pokémon
franchise. It is a Stage 2 Pokémon, of the / dual-type and is #373 in the National Pokédex
. Similar to Dragonite
in Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow and Tyranitar
in Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Salamence is considered the apex of power in the Pokémon video games Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, in terms of Stage 2 Pokémon.

The story of its evolution (growing wings after many long years) may be insipred by myths of Chinese dragons, who gained wings after one thousand years.

Its name is a portmanteu of salamander and menace. Interestingly, the French name for Charmander
is Salameche.

Biology

Salamence is known to fly through the air, spitting wheels of flame, due to its joy of finally being able to fly. It is said that Salamence resulted as a mutation in Shelgon's genes due to a long-held dream of one day being able to fly, thus resulting in the sprouting of its magnificent crimson wings. Despite its bulky frame and seemingly non-aerodynamic wings, it can fly with great agility.

In the video games

Salamence is labeled as an "OU" (Over-Used) Pokémon by avid Pokémon players. Its relatively high statistics and large movepool make it a common choice for tournament players. Salamence is typically used as a fast sweeper, usually without choiceband assistance. This is to allow Salamence to Dragon Dance twice, after which it becomes nearly unstoppable. Even without Dragon Dance, an earthquake, rock slide or aerial ace (which gets STAB) coming off of Salamence's 405 max attack will severely dent virtually anything. In fact Salamence is so powerful it is often accused of being a strategyless, cheap pokemon. Some of the accusations have a bit of strength behind them. Like Dragonite, Mew, Tyranitar, Celebi, Metagross, Latias, Latios, Jirachi and Deoxys, Salamence has total stats of 600 and it is considered to be an 'umproved' Dragonite. Unlike Dragonite, which is much slower and has a worse special ability (thereby making it easier to counter), Salamence is exceptionally fast, powerful, and even with EV's minimized on defense, can still take several strong physical hits due to its useful Intimidate ability. With proper play, Salamence is easily one of the most feared OU pokemon in the Ruby/Sapphire advance generation.

Availability

Salemence can only be obtained by evolving Shelgon at level 50. Alternatively, it can be snagged from Cipher Admin Eldes in Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.

In the animé

Three trainers in the animé own a Salamence. In the sixth movie, one is owned by Butler, and is used to both help and battle Ash. Another Salamence is owned by Drake of the Hoenn Elite Four.

The third is owned by an older trainer named Silver (no connection to the Pokémon Adventures
character of the same name
) in Pokémon Chronicles
that searched for Moltres with Richie
in The Search for a Legend. It also appeared in Vanity Affair.

In other properties

In the manga

Salamence has not yet appeared in Pokémon Adventures
.

In the card game

Salamence has appeared on four trading cards, always as a Stage 2 Pokemon.
  • EX Dragon (Holo-card, Colorless)
  • EX Dragon (Rare card, Colorless)
  • EX Deoxys (As Salamence EX, Colorless)
  • EX Delta Species (As a Steel/Fire dual type)
The Energy cards its attacks require are Fire and Water. This follows a tradition in the card game to give Dragon-type Pokemon multi-energy attacks to separate them from Normal and Flying-type Pokemon, who are also colorless.
