Games - Serge

Serge is the silent protagonist of the Square Co., Ltd. RPG Chrono Cross. Like several other console RPG main characters, Serge's dialogue isn't shown on screen. He is an uncomplicated youth from Arni Village, a small fishing town on the south part of the El Nido Archipelago's central island. Ten years prior to the events of Chrono Cross, Serge's father mysteriously disappeared, and Serge had an unfortunate incident in which he nearly drowned. One day, when searching for Komodo Dragon scales for his friend Leena, Serge is drawn into Another World. At a glance, this alternate dimension is very similar to Serge's own world. However, when returning to Arni Village, Serge discovers that the only Serge that ever lived there drowned ten years ago.

In other dimensions

Another World

As mentioned above, in Another World, Serge was drowned by Lynx
in the year 1010 A.D. at the age of seven. The Home World was in fact created as a result of Kid
traveling back in time after the events of Chrono Cross to save Serge from Lynx. Prior to this event, both the Serge of the Home and Another dimensions, was attacked by a panther demon. To save his son, Wazuki, Serge's father, attempted to sail to Marbule to find a cure for the panther's poison. He and Miguel set out during a storm and ended up in the Sea of Eden and entered Chronopolis. There, Serge was exposed to the Frozen Flame and was healed. After the storm passed, Serge was listed as an "Arbiter", the highest security level of Chronopolis and was the only lifeform able to access the flame, hindering Fate's ability to control El Nido. It is revealed later that Schala sensed Serge's Cry throughout all time and used her magic to create the storm which lead him to Chronopolis and exposing him to Lavos's Flame. It is for this reason that Lynx sought to take Serge's body, in order to access the flame and stop prometheus circuit, allowing Fate to have total control over El Nido. In order to do so, the supercomputer, Fate, needed a physical form, and downloaded it's mind into Wazuki, as well as changing Wazuki's appearance to that of a humanoid panther demon, as to facilitate the hunt for Serge, since Serge developed a phobia toward felines after the attack.

Radical Dreamers

In the Satellaview
sequel to Chrono Trigger, Radical Dreamers, Serge is a travelling musician and part of the band of thieves, the Radical Dreamers. This "Serge" however, can talk and shows greater affection for Kid than his Chrono Cross counterpart appears to. It is sometimes argued that there is no separate Radical Dreamers world, but that Chrono Cross is a remake of the game(Although Radical Dreamers(the band of thieves) is brought up at one point in time in Chrono Cross.).

Other information

Connection Serge and Magus (Janus Zeal)

Some speculate that Serge is the reincarnation of Magus
from "Chrono Trigger". Many argue that this is true because of their similarly blue hair and that Lucca's note to Kid/Schala mentions that Janus may already be near. This view argues that while Guile might have originally been meant to be Magus, the story was changed when Guile's background was diverted from Janus/Magus.

This view is somewhat controversial in light of no other hint toward Janus' identity having been offered on the part of the story's writer, and the fact that Kid/Schala and Serge are officially confirmed to have married after the events of Chrono Cross. This confirmation was made by the following:

1) A portrait of Serge and Kid in formal attire sits on the desk with the journal in the ending FMV.

2) The official Missing Pieces artbook of Chrono Cross identified the attire of the two in the portrait as wedding attire.

3) The story's writer, Masato Kato, in an interview with Procyon Studio, referred to the story as an old fashioned "boy-meets-girl" tale, with its central characters (Kid and Serge) beginning their "true" journey together after the events of the game ended, adding a hint that this "true" journey would be indicated by something in the game's ending (the wedding portrait).

Others claim that Magus was proven to be Magil (aka Gil) from "Radical Dreamers". In the title "Chrono Cross" Magus was originally meant to be Guile, who has a distinct resemblance in namesake to the shortened translated version of Magil's name, Gil. It was admitted by officials that Guile was originally meant to be Magus in disguise, but in the end his story was omitted, and Guile was made into a separate character.
