"The Serpent Lord", or "The Black Serpent", is a name commonly used to refer to the unnamed leader of the Haradrim in JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, so called because of his distinctive banner imagery. He is only briefly mentioned in two paragraphs in The Return of the King, but is nonetheless a key figure in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields: "Southwards beyond the road lay the main force of the Haradrim, and there their horsemen were gathered about the standard of their chieftan." After picking out King Theoden and the few Rohirrim still left on the battlefield, he wrathfully turned his men towards them, "displaying his standard, black serpent upon scarlet... and the drawing of the scimitars of the Southrons was like a glitter of stars." Theoden in turn charged to face him, but the Northmen proved the more skillful, and they "clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest." Just as the Lord of the Rings card game invented names for the Nazgul, so too did Games Workshop invent a name for the Black Serpent in its Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, though neither his name nor the supposed details of his life are considered canon.
