Games - Sonic X

:This article is about Sonic X, an animated series. For the comic book series of the same name, see Sonic X (Archie)
.

is a Japanese animated television series based on the Sonic the Hedgehog storylines of Sonic Adventure series. Its rated genres are: action, adventure, sci-fi and comedy. It was animated and produced in Japan by TMS Entertainment with the partnership of Sega
and the Sonic Team
. In 2003, 4Kids Entertainment licensed Sonic X for American U.S. licensing in a joint effort between 4Kids and VIZ Media (it was formerly with ShoPro Entertainment before ShoPro and VIZ, LLC merged into VIZ Media). It is also showed in Europe, Australia and Brazil by Jetix, in Canada by YTV, and in Malaysia by ntv7. Originally planned as a 52 episode series which would be inspired by the storylines of the Sonic Adventure series, Sonic X has now expanded to 78 episodes which was shown in USA, Thailand, and France in January 2005.

The 4Kids version of Sonic X has been criticized for editing out portions and re-wording certain phrases to make it more child-friendly (This also applies to other 4Kids dubs), and rejecting Sonic's former English game voice actor Ryan Drummond who wanted to voice for Sonic in the anime. 4Kids rejected him simply because he didn't live in New York City, which is the location of the production studio (and it certainly didn't help that this eventually led to him being replaced in the games because Sega wanted to make all the voices uniform). Ironically, the Japanese version has the original Japanese seiyu from the Sonic Adventure series, as well as direct quotes from the games, which were almost all changed in the 4Kids version. Even Sonic Adventure 2's theme song, "Live and Learn" which was in Episode 38, was gone. This infuriated many Sonic X fans as well as general Sonic and anime fans which is why they prefer the unedited Japanese version. Many fans have sent petitions for uncut DVDs; 4kids has made no comment on the subject.

In September 2005, Archie Comics, publishers of the North American Sonic the Hedgehog comics
started a Sonic X comic book series
based on Sonic X. According to writer Joe Edkin, the first nine issues will take place in the TV continuity between episodes 32 and 33, which falls between the Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 story lines. After this, the stories' chronological positions will vary for some time. Issue 16 will take place between episodes 46 and 47, right after the Sonic Battle storyline; future issues through at least 2009 will probably occur in this same time period.

The series has gained popularity with preteen audiences and has a wide range of fans within the Sonic fandom. However, it is fair to note that many Sonic fans are disillusioned with the series because of its sharp contrast to the games, cause even though Sonic X does cover and adapt three of the games, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Battle, the plot is often very different. Perhaps the most notable difference is that while all games canonicaly takes place on Earth (one official Japanese game manual even mentions where on Earth Sonic was born; Christmas Island) a major plot element in Sonic X is that Sonic and his friends got transported to Earth from another world. Also, many of the character's personalities have been changed. Tails
, for example, takes on a light Shinji Ikari
persona by the second series and rarely flies or fights, making him look slightly geeky. The series is also criticized for needlessly making relationships between characters, for example, Christopher Thorndyke and Sonic are so close that it seems to eclipse Tails' position as Sonic's best friend. However, it should be noted that Sonic X is in no way considered part of the wider SegaSonic canon or continuity. As such, this naturally grants the series' creators artistic license to maintain the premise of the series: What if Sonic were a part of the human world?

List of characters

Major
  • Sonic the Hedgehog ~ The universe's fastest supersonic hedgehog. Since his debut on the 16-bit Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic has become a recognizable icon worldwide and even has appeared on various non-SEGA consoles lately, including the Nintendo
    Gamecube, Microsoft's
    Xbox,
    and Sony's
Playstation 2. He is very carefree and laid-back, though cannot stand evil and it would go against his kind nature to not help someone in danger. He utilizes his special trademark abilities, speed and spin attack to thwart any enemies that may threaten the landscape, including Doctor Eggman
and the ruthless Dark Oak. Sonic also has a knack of uttering English wisecracks, such as, "Yes! Here we go!" and "Ready, go!" Needless to say, it was bound to confuse children who didn't understand a word of English, so SONIC project included a special "Sonic English" featurette with each DVD.
