Sony Vegas is a non-linear editing system produced by Sony Media Software. It features network rendering, transition progress envelopes, downmix monitoring, external control surface support, and envelope automation recording.

The product comes in a variety of price points based on the number of supplied addins and extensibility of features. The key benefit is that the consumer level Vegas Studio versions share the same basic engine as the professional Vegas version.

Vegas is the first non-linear editor to offer external preview without any form of acceleration hardware. It also is the first editor with serious audio tools built in, that have been used by engineers for artists as diverse as the 5.1 surround mix for Yes, used for recordings by Shania Twain, Rod Stewart, and Quiet Riot among others.

Compositing, audio recording, web encoding, and unlimited audio/video tracks are among the key features of the application. Vegas offers all of the same basic blending modes of the "big" compositing tools, and allows users to do basic compositing right in the application itself. Native 24p editing was first made possible in Vegas; more than a year in advance of the competition.

Vegas started life as an audio-only tool with particular focus on rescaling and resampling audio, making it arguably a leader in its category. Multicam is easy in Vegas with inexpensive third party plugins.

Vegas as an editor, has won awards for major broadcasters using it, including Nightline w/Ted Koppel. Several film festival winners have used Vegas to cut their features.

Vegas' greatest weakness in the face of its main competitors, Avid and Final cut, is it does not have their robust level of media management.
