| Stantler (オドシシ Odoshishi in Japan, Damhirplex in Germany and Cerfrousse in France) is a fictional species of reindeer in the Pokémon video games, manga, and animé. It was introduced in the second generation. The name "Stantler" is a portmanteau of stag, and the word antler, which means one of a pair of hornlike, bony, deciduous growths, on the head of members of the deer family. Another possibility could be that it is instead a portmanteau of stare and antler, given that its horns resemble a pair of large eyes. Appearance/BiologyStantler is a herd pokémon that physically resembles a reindeer. It can be diurnal or nocturnal. Its most notable feature are its horns. Both the male and the female have these horns. Each set of horns has a set of balls on them; these balls are the basis of most of Stantler's special abilities. When their horns are shed in the winter, the balls can be ground up and made into a potent sleeping aid, so there is both a thriving cottage industry in tending after Stantler herds, and poaching of Stantler. These balls are also the source of Stantler's ability to create illusions. The horns double as defense mechanisms -- they look like large eyes which can scare predators. In the video gamesStantler can be found in Pokémon Gold and Silver in Routes 36 and 37, and in Pokémon Crystal, where it can be found in Route 37. In the GBA generation of games, it can be found in Pokemon Emerald in the Safari Zone, available after beating the Elite Four for the first time.Stantler, like many Basic Pokémon with no evolutions, has mostly average statistics. Its highest point is its Attack stat, which is in the top 20% of all Pokémon, followed closely by Special Attack and Speed. Though it is normal-type, Stantler’s available moves contain several Psychic-type moves. In fact, it can gain the strong Psychic move Extrasensory through breeding (a move normally exclusive to Nuzleaf). Stantler can also learn Confuse Ray and TM moves such as Thunderbolt, Earthquake, and Shadow Ball. On the whole, it is a Pokémon that is okay to train, but is not seen often in hardcore competitive play. In the AniméStanter's most notable animé appearance was in the short Santa's Little Helpers, in which Ash and company must save Christmas by finding a cure for Santa's sick Stantler.Tracey also sketched a stantler horns in a picture he showed proffeser Oak on the video phone. A herd of Stantler also played an important role in Episode 127, "The Little Big Horn," in which a herd of Stantler, agitated by Team Rocket's attempts to capture them and the illness of the youngest in their herd, make a city's park too dangerous for local residents to visit. Other than the above appearances, Stantler has played roles in episodes 126 (Snubbull Snobbery), 148 (Tricks of the Trade), 191 (Freeze Frame), 243 (Hocus Pokémon), and 287 (A Bite To Remember). Stanter is also mentioned in a couple of songs from Pokémon Christmas Bash. In the trading card gameStantler has made four appearances. They are all Basic Pokémon and Colorless:
