Thanos is a fictional character created by Jim Starlin and published by Marvel Comics. He is a Titanian Eternal and is often referred to as The Mad Titan. His name is from the root of the Greek word for "death" (thanatos). Currently in the modern Greek language, Thanos is a nickname of persons with the proper name Athanasius. He was originally a ripoff of Jack Kirby's Darkseid. Thanos is one of the few comic book villains to star in his own series.

Character history

Born on Saturn's moon Titan, Thanos is a mutant of the race of Eternals that live in a special colony in that moon. He is one of the sons of the colony's ruler, Mentor, and brother of Eros (Starfox); however, for unknown reasons, he was born with purple-grey, hide-like skin and a massive body. Despite fair treatment from his people, Thanos grew distant and obsessed because of his differences. By means of bionic implants and through long hours of strength and ability-augmenting meditation, Thanos eventually became the most powerful of the Eternals. As his powers grew, however, so too, did his ambition. (Note that a demonic entity called the Dragon of the Moon has claimed that it influenced Thanos' evil tendencies.) He was eventually exiled from Titan after comitting hideous crimes, including matricide.

However, Eros and his brother Thanos, have a custom, where each year they bury the hatchet and convene at a neutral place, usually bearing gifts. An initiative of their father, who demanded that the two would meet every year as a reminder of the blood that runs through both their veins. The meeting is called The Truce and the two meet alone, although the hero Quasar was present at one of their meetings, and they will not fight.

Thanos, since childhood, had been obsessed with the occult, specifically with death. His obsession developed into a twisted kind of love and devotion. Thanos would take hundreds-of-millions of lives throughout the cosmos, offering the mass-killings as gifts to Death. He eventually became the male companion to Death, who appeared to him in female form. It is thought that Death is attracted to his philosophical dedication to nihilism as well as his willingness to commit genocide on even his own people. An attack by Thanos on The Titan Eternals resulted in many deaths.

When Thanos came to Earth, he killed a family that accidentally saw him land. This led to the creation of Drax the Destroyer and the origin of Moondragon.

Thanos stole the power of Earth's Cosmic Cube but was defeated by Captain Marvel with help from the Avengers and the Titanian Eternals when he carelessly left the Cube behind and Marvel destroyed it.

Thanos concluded that the being called The Magus was a menace to his plans. He raised the female assassin called Gamora as part of his plan to destroy him. He joined forces with Adam Warlock to defeat Magus, but he also secretly drained part of the energies of Warlock's Soul Gem in the process.

Sometime later, Thanos used the energies gathered from all the other 'Soul Gems' (actually the Infinity Gems) to power a machine that would destroy all the stars in the universe, as his "gift" to Death. Warlock tried to stop him but Thanos killed his friends Gamora and Pip the Troll, and mortally wounded Warlock, who died as a result of actions he had taken earlier to prevent The Magus' existence; all three had their souls absorbed by the Soul Gem. However the Avengers, Captain Marvel, the Thing, Spider-Man and the spirit of Warlock -momentarilly manifesting from the Soul Gem- defeated him, and Thanos was killed by being turned to stone.

However, years later, Thanos was revived by Death, who wanted him to reduce the universe's overpopulation. Thanos stole the Infinity Gems from the Elders of the Universe and put them in his glove, creating the Infinity Gauntlet and became omnipotent with it; however, once again he carelessly lost it to the space pirate Nebula. Warlock (who had raised himself, as well as Pip and Gamora, from the dead to face Thanos again) recognized that Thanos' efforts to obtain omnipotence had been thwarted not only by the intervention of superheroes but also by Thanos' own self-doubt and anxiety, and explained it to him. With Thanos' help, Warlock was able to take the Gauntlet from Nebula. Under the Gauntlet's influence, and believing the Titan to be capable of change as well as wishing to keep Thanos where he could keep an eye on him, Warlock made Thanos a member of the Infinity Watch, giving him the Reality Gem, one of the Infinity Gems which Warlock and the Watch guarded.

Ultimately, the Watch was disbanded, and Thanos returned to villainy, albeit half-heartedly. He later claimed that these subsequent appearances were all half-formed clones. After destroying and recreating the universe twice, Thanos apparently gave up his quest for power, though just how long he will refrain from acts of evil is unknown.
